3. It comes from the movie Office Space, written by Mike Judge

It's used by the character Michael Bolton. He's ranting about the singer of the same name and calls him an ass clown. Check out the movie; it's a hoot.

4. IIRC, there was a reason they couldn't call Bolton an "asshole"

I think they were afraid of legal ramifications. So they called him an "ass clown" instead, which is a hundred times funnier and has now become part of the language.
