CONFESS!!! What are you snobby/demanding about?
If I drink wine, it will be white, preferably Pinot Grigio or Pinot Gris, and it will be excellent.
If I drink scotch, it will either be single malt or, if it must be blended, Chivas Regal.
If I drink vodka, it will be Ketel One or equivalent.
My cigarettes are either Marlboro or Galoises.
If I play Monopoly, I WILL be the car.

On the other hand, I'll drink just about any beer or coffee.

So... how 'bout y'all?

1. I can be pretty snobby about the wine too
but i could care less what piece I am in Monopoly...
Wine will be red (unless it is sparkling), a burgundy or a grenache.
No hard liquor please (makes me really mean)
My smokes are only Nat Sherman.

Would we get along in real life???

we may not agree on wine or cigarettes (hmph... Philistine ;) ), but we'd have plenty of areas in which we do agree -- politics, for example. Every DUer at least has that in common.

3. Not necessarily. I would say 40-60%
of my views don't agree with democrats. I don't agree at all with republicans though (I'm more on the libertarian/anarchist quadrant). I'm here mostly for a friendly, non abusive/ bush supporting time. But even though I don't agree with alot of people, I can still get along with them. :hi:

7. Oh, certainly DUers disagree about tons of stuff...
I tend to fall more in the social libertarian area myself -- lots of government regulation of business, but stay the hell out of private lives. Certainly, most DUers would disagree with me about gun rights and a few other issues.

I'm just saying that, for the most part, we can find common ground.

11. Cheese and shoes
That's an odd combination... But I loathe grocery-store cheese like Kraft, Sargento, etc. It must be gourmet, real cheese; the sharper the better. Like Montgomery Cheddar which is currently $28/lb.

And I can't stand cheap shoes. No fake Birkenstocks for me; they must be the real thing.

Name brand toilet paper, absolutely. Must be thick.

And real jewelry; not costume.

On the other hand, cheap beer and wine are fine by me.

...used to live where it got chilly...I would drive my mother insane trying to find me 'just the perfect coat' each Fall.

Now, I live where it is warm most of the year...and I wear hoodies.

But my shoes, I'd rather go barefoot then wear 'an uncute pair of shoes'.

Cheese...I must admit, I am not a cheddar fan. I am into aged gouda (at least 4 years), or a Morbier.

Shoes - absolutely!
Jewels - why wear fake?
I don't do cheap beer or wine though - I am spoiled...the hubby is a wine salesman.

Edited on Tue Jun-20-06 03:10 PM by SharonRB
I'm not quite as picky about the cheese, although I prefer something that doesn't come in a cellophane package, but shoes, toilet paper and jewelry need to be the real deal (although some good costume stuff is okay, especially if it's artist-made like from a good art fair). Of course, the real deal at a discount price always works -- I buy most of my shoes at DSW. Purses are the same thing -- gotta be well made, real leather, no fake plastic stuff.

I hate beer, so it's not relevant, and I'm not much a wine drinker. I prefer cosmos (with Grey Goose) or other mixed drinks.

And my football? Must be played in the Big House, of course!

I always seem to destroy cheap shoes at an insane rate (if I even find ones comfortable enough to wear), but my expensive shoes seem to last forever. I love DSW. I found $200 Guess stilettos (for my mom's wedding) there for $50. I've been a fan ever since.

82. Only about one a year
I have a balance disorder (I only have one inner ear) which makes navigating the stadium difficult (very few handrails). I am glued to the TV, though, and my family and I (all UM alumni) all call each other after TDs.

We will have to get together to tailgate or watch a game, though (I live in Ann Arbor). Progmom lives close to the stadium; I KNOW she'll let us park in her driveway!

My house is at the top of the Hill Street hill; on mornings when there is an early game -- like noon -- I wake up to the Victors wafting up the street from the band at their early practice. It's great!

*Agree on Pinot Grigio
*Fast-food is unhealthy, but not-food snobby as raising 3 kids alone we couldn't afford to be picky.
*Understand smokers, but lifelong anti-smoking due to being raised by 3 chain smokers caused bronchitis and I always had to hang my head out the car window. Mom died of emphysema too soon.
*Anti-drug because I've seen family and others destroy our/their lives with drugs.
*Anti-snobbery/rude/bully tactics from whatever, whomever.

You may have the car, sir, for I prefer the thimble.

They didn't get why I found it so funny at first. My friend (liberal college professor) and I had to explain the whole Dan Qualye thing to them.

I'm doing pretty good, spending a lot of time at the pool. I haven't even turned a bit red from the sun, since the march. Just my black Irish "tan." Studying up on my drinks for my bartending school test on Friday. Then, I'll be pretty busy for a bit. NYC for pride, then upstate for my trial and Soulforce training, then CT for 4th of July week. After that, I'll be job-hunting.

68. The trial is civil disobedience.
For when I was arrested at West Point protesting against "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" with Soulforce. The most I could get sentenced with is $500 (which Soulforce will pay) and 6 months jail (which is unlikely to happen).

Yeah, I'm looking for a bartending job. Hopefully in the Jersey City/Hoboken area. A bit of a commute, but the extra money is worth it. My theatre work isn't volunteer work. My next stage managing gig will get me into Actors' Equity, the union for actors & stage managers.

Bad grammar makes me cringe: "we need less patients in the next group" but the word "youse" makes me want to leave a restaurant (it always seems to be waitresses) "are youse ready to order?" Arrrgggg!!! Wish I could afford more local restaurants where they won't allow the waitstaff to use the word "youse".

1. Grammar/spelling. For fuck's sake, use it correctly!! :grr:

2. Music. The only type of music to which I will listen that is sometimes considered "Muzak" is Steely Dan. Other than that, I stick with classic rock, jazz, etc.

3. My desk. I WILL have one side of it a disaster zone. I WILL, I WILL!! And I WILL organize my CDs (on one corner of my desk) by genre and artist!

4. Pens. I am specific about my pens. They must have a certain grip, a certain feel--and none of this fountain-pen stuff that smears all over the page while you're writing, either. x( x(

5. I WILL write my name (first AND last!), the date, the class, and the period on everything I hand in at school, dammit!

6. I will not get jazzed up to sit around the house all day. I do not care about the possibility of "running into" someone. If people come by the house on a WEEKEND, especially with no prior warning, they cannot expect me to be in slacks and a button-down shirt.

7. I WILL finish the paragraph I am writing, or the song I am playing, before I get up to help finish something. I cannot stand to leave something in the middle--only in a real emergency will I do that.

As far as Irish whiskey, I actually prefer Tullamore Dew to Jamesons -- though Jamesons 1780 beats Tullamore Dew. And all of that is obviously better than Bushmills, which is made in Northern Ireland and is therefore the Irish whiskey of The Enemy (why, yes, my entire family is Irish. How could you tell?)

39. We should never play monopoly together.
Other than that, I think we'd get along fine. Never had the Tullamore Dew, but I will give it a shot. I don't drink Bushmills either because it's Northern Irish (yep, big Irish family here, too).

60. Marlboro Lights or Camel Lights?
You are not a serious smoker. PLEASE!

Unfiltered Gauloises or Camels or Pall Mall. Filters, in and of themselves, are pure wimpdom, much less LIGHTS!!!!!! What has smoking fallen to?

says this ex-smoker.

69. I can't handle unfiltered.
I'll smoke regular filtered cigarettes, if they're offered, but I buy lights. Anyway, marlboro and camel are the companies that send me coupons. I also smoke the occaisional American Spirits.

80. Smoked unfiltered
Camels in college. Mostly smoked to "look cool" - I know, dumb. But I never got a habit, could fall in and out of smoking at will. As opposed to roomies who hacked themselves out of bed in the AM.

45. I am snobby about my politics. I admit it. I really
don't think republicans are as intelligent as liberals.

I am demanding about public education and the way the special education students are treated. I am an advocate and can be quite a handful to the wrong people, that is those who have been educated beyond their intelligence.

I feel nothing but disdain for people who like to do the one up manship thing. A back handed compliment is no compliment at all.

I am NOT snobby about wine. If it's white and cold, I will drink it.

That is the only snobbery I still do. I used to be a beer snob to a certain degree, but after experienceing the joys of German and Czech beer, even the expensive stuff here seemed mediocre, so I'd just as soon drink Schlitz or Hamm's beer than spend a lot on slightly better stuff. For Xmas though I always splurge and get a case of Czechvar

66. Perfume. I detest cheap perfume.
My preference is Chanel. Number 5 and Mademoiselle Coco. Part of my love of Paris is perfume shopping while I am there.

And I love jewelry. But since I don't have occasion to wear a lot of it, I prefer to spend my "pin" money on perfume.

71. Let's see:
I refuse to eat red meat that's cooked over medium rare, and steaks I prefer bleu. The more it's cooked, the less flavour it has.

I only smoke Camels or Dunhills. Marlboros have a foul chemical aftertaste, and I won't smoke Gauloises because they're the most disgusting cigarettes I've ever had (of course, they were unfiltered Gauloises Caporals, which may have something to do with it.)

I won't drink most American beer. Or, for that matter, Warsteiner, or Heineken, or Beck's, or Corona, or Stella.

I won't drink bourbon that's less than eight years old or less than ninety proof, gin that isn't Bombay Sapphire or Plymouth, scotch that isn't single-malt, and if I drink Irish, it's Jameson's (which comes from Cork, as did my great-great-grandfather).

I don't listen to commercial radio, and haven't in nearly a decade. Because it sucks.

I write with a fountain pen, because I don't like ballpoints.

I won't wear most clothing that isn't made of 100% natural fibres. Because synthetic fabrics are uncomfortable, itchy, and look cheap.

I indulge in good hand and body lotions and hair care products but I'm not snobby about it, I don't think. I've been poor and washed my hair with dish soap - not good for it but it works.

I've never had enough money to be snobby.

Okay, there's this new stuff in my favorite natural food store called "Icelandic glacial" but that's the only thing I can stand to substitute for Hawaii Water. Which is the only drinkable liquid in the world to me most days.

If I drink wine, it will be Santa Ema Chilean Pinot Noir.

If I drink scotch, Chivas Regal, or Old Parr when I'm ornery.

If I drink vodka, it will be Smirnoff, cause it's cheap. Stolichnaya on occasion.

My cigarettes (used to be) John Player Specials or Dunhill (20 years since I last smoked).

If I play Monopoly, It will be the original game.

If I drink Beer, it will be Mexican or Canadian.

Coffee, Green Mountain or Dunkin Donuts.

I developed a taste for high-quality cigars rather early in life. These days I have a couple of good smokes a month or thereabouts. Havanas if I can get them, which I sometime can't; Avos, Dunhills, or Ashtons when the Cuban varieties aren't available.....

*If I drink Vodka, it is either Stoli or Grey Goose, and it absolutely must be ice cold
*If I smoke ciggies, it will be American Spirits or good clove ciggies
*When I smoke pot, it will be the best I can buy
*When I get pizza, it must be NY style otherwise it ain't pizza
*When I get tattoos, I will always pay top dollar and I expect great service, great artistic vision (ad I tip well)

I love Cosmopolitans, but God help the bartender that DOESN'T know how to make one correctly.
If I'm drinking tequila, I'll be sipping Chinaco Anejo. Friends don't let friends drink Jose Cuervo.
I drink Guinness. There is no other kind of beer, thank you.
Christmas gifts: I want nothing that plugs in. Nothing. No household appliances, no car gadgets, nothing. I offer a list; I don't need everything on it, but I do like being somewhat surprised.
I love cheeseburgers with cheddar. No American cheese, please.
I like fine jewelry. I will wear costume in a pinch, but the only type of costume I'll wear is something that would be so prohibitively expensive IRL (try a 60" rope of Tahitian pearls,) I will spend some cash for the best fakes I can get.
Oh, yeah: French perfume or nothin'. (I prefer Annick Goutal's scents.) Bare Escentuals makeup and body care.
Men, the worst snobbery of all ;-): I love tall men, especially if they're brilliant, funny, thoughtful, and can laugh at themselves. If they're not any of those things, I didn't want to date them, and I still don't want to be around them.

Julie
I am a really nice person. Most of the time ;-).

Only on a desert island would I settle for a Snickers, and most other commercial chocolates are junk. Godiva is highly over-rated. Only See's Candies passes my taste test. As for coffee, it has to be strong and fresh roasted. No cans from the grocery.

94. I don't think demanding is snobby. Snobby excludes. Demanding
is just about the things that matter to you. Values. Some americans demand outward representation of patriotism. Are they snobby? No..they just expect certain things... patriotism in their own family is an important value.

Are parents who demand good grades from perfectly normal kids.. snobby? No..they are just demanding.

Asking for more isn't snobby.
