Edited on Tue Jun-20-06 12:33 PM by JVS
I've eaten there with my mom and brother, we had a great time. It's similar to Metzger's on Zeeb road but better atmosphere (Metzger's hasn't been the same since it moved out of downtown).

Here's the website http://www.zumschneider.com/

The Kaesespaetzle looks good.

Now some would say "Why eat at a German place in NYC", my reply is that good German places are fairly scarce and should be treasured when found.

often as kids because of football games.
From what I've heard the family running Metzger's was nearly bankrupted by the slowdown in business caused by the long-lasting rennovation of the parking garage nearby. It's a real shame too, because they'd finally bought out the corner next door that used to be an army surplus store and had set up a really nice bar too. The food and drink at the new Metzger's is as good as before, but even with the beergarden they've added, it's not the same. I've been in AA a few times in the last 4 years and I must confess that the town isn't what it used to be. Chains have taken over way too much. Drakes---> Brueggers, the used book store---> potbelly sandwich shop, Hobby shop--> apparently gone, Metzger's---> sports bar, the town where as a small child I wondered "Who are these people smoking small cigarettes that smell funny and reciting poetry about an episode of Tom and Jerry?" has become the town of "Why does everything on this street smell of fried food and garlic?"

I now live in the home town of the big ten's most offensive mascot :-)

59. We liked Old German better
Same family as Metzgers but we liked the food there better.

Too bad Drakes didn't hold out longer (I have a wonderful old photo from the 1920s) but nobody was interested in carrying on after the owners retired. Chains are creeping into A2 proper but there are still many more locally-owned restaurants and businesses than a lot of places.

47. There's a place just off Seventh and Seventh
Just north of Houston. If it's not in the Lower East Side, it's very close to it.

It's an Italian joint. Specifically a pizza joint that makes those Old World thin-crust pizzas in a wood-burning oven.

Excellent pizza. Probably the best I had in Manhattan when I was there and I was on a mission to find the best. Now the name of this place escapes me now but it's somebody's name.

Maybe Vince's or Frankie's or something like that. I think it's Frankie's, but I'm not sure.

But if you're in the mood for Italian, but don't want pizza, I recommend Lupa, which is in Greenwich Village, I believe. It's a little expensive but it's amazing. My friend who took me there said it's owned by Mario (forgot his last name) that famous chef.

In fact, I have the matchbox right in front of me. The address is: 170 Thompson Street, Ny, NY 10012.

Phone number is 212-982-5089

Edited on Tue Jun-20-06 05:40 PM by RagingInMiami
Is that the first pizzeria in NY? The one that's in Little Italy? I tried that, but I thought the other one was better.

Maybe I'm thinking of Grimaldi's, but I know for sure this place wasn't Lombardi's because if it's not that one place in Little Italy, then it's one I meant to try but never got around to trying
