so what are you listening to right now?
Mother and child are out of the house until tomorrow evening, so I've got a mix CD I made a while back on - loudly. RATM, Tool, others. "Born of a Broken Man" is on now.

but Opeth has a lot of melody and musicality to it; not just the grinding crush of lower tuned guitars and bass.

29. I like it a lot
I'm listening to Touchstones. Sometimes it'll show up in my Randomizer and at first I'll think it's Willie Nelson, which isn't an entirely accurate comparison but fairly close. His song "Are They Gonna Make Us Outlaws Again" has a nice contemporary Woody Guthrie feel to it . . . 'There's always been a bottom and there's always been a top. Someone took the orders and someone called the shots, someone took the beating lord and someone got the prize. That may be the way it's always been but that don't make it right.'

48. Wow, look at this statement from....
Link Wray's website. http://www.linkwraylegend.com/

snip...
...Link is known for his instrumental hit single "Rumble". And to quote Uncut magazine, who voted Link #33 of the 100 best guitarist list in the World, as the composer of the world's most threatening instrumental: “The violent intimations of "Rumble" so struck sensitive late 50's sensibilities that it was banned by many radio stations. Not bad for an instrumental. "Rumble" will outlive us all”....

49. I read that and thought,
"How jaded are my ears that the idea of someone finding a guitar instrumental 'threatening' seems so ridiculous?" Music doesn't mean what it once did. Then again, Wray was born the same year as my father, so who knows?

For those wondering, here's how grades would correspond to my 4-star rating system:

4 stars - A+ or A
3 1/2 stars - A-
3 stars - B+ or B
2 1/2 stars - B- or C+
2 stars - C+ or C
1 1/2 stars - C- or D+
1 star - D
1/2 star - D-
0 stars - F

I took out Leona Naess's self-titled CD - I give it 4 stars out of 4!

I listened to Nelly Furtado's Loose and Keane's Under The Iron Sea at the full album listening party. Thoughts:

Loose - The good news is that Promiscuous is one of the worst songs. The bad news is that to me, much of Loose actually feals tense and contrived. Gwen's new CD is more playful IMO. On "No Hay Igual," Nelly Furtado says the title like it's an afterthought - when it translates to the passionate "it does not have equal." I enjoy the older Nelly more. Loose gets 2 stars, or C.

Under The Iron Sea - "Is It Any Wonder?" breaks loose, but still sounds a bit like U2. I thought only that song and "Leaving So Soon?" were memorable songs. The CD rarely rises above pleasant. I give it 2 stars, or C+.

Samples from -

Be Your Own Pet - it's rare that youngsters these days do the purer side of punk. What I heard was better than Fever To Tell by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, though less unique.

And finally, Paris Hilton's new song. Not surprisingly, I disliked it. Does she really think she's Blondie?! Not even a good summer song.

83. Wohltemperiertes Klavier, with Gould on harpsichord
Pretty dry with no volume control, but still neat! Can't beat Gould for contrapuntal stuff

94. Nacho Libre was fucking ridiculous.
But you have to expect that going into the movie (since it was written by Napoleon Dynamite writer/director Jared Hess), and it's absolutely hilarious. And the other thing is - the movie would be very lame without Jack Black in it. But I highly recommend it!

I loved their first three but didn't get much into Lateralus... what do you think of 10,000 Days so far?

92. I like it
but then again, I'm a die hard Tool fan. 10,000 Days is dark and moody, and most of the songs are 5 and 6 minutes plus. After listening to the CD for a few days, the standout songs for me are "Vicarious", "10,000 Days (Wings part 2)", "Rosetta Stoned", and "Right in Two".

96. No problem.
I don't know if this helps your decision at all, but in my opinion, even though 10,000 Days is good, I'd say it's a safe bet that there aren't any "radio friendly" songs on it, other than "Vicarious". Other CD's of theirs have "Anema", "Forty Six and Two", "Sober", "H", etc... Songs that made it on the radio. 10,000 Days doesn't have any songs that are that radio friendly, other than "Vicarious", which I mentioned. It's hard, moody, dark, and most of the songs are lengthy.

Me - sometimes I'm in the mood for stuff like that, so I like it. Then again, I like all sorts of stuff. :)

97. oh no worries...
"radio friendly" is most *definitely* not what makes a song interesting or worthwhile to me. :)

I used to be a HUGE Ani fan in the 90's and then started to not like her stuff in this century. But I read somewhere that this album was/is a return to her old form and whoever wrote that was/is right! I can't stop listening to it...
