White Sox manager uses slur; upsets gay rights activists!

Aw snap!

Gay rights activists criticized White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen on Wednesday for using a derogatory term for homosexuals during a profanity-laced tirade against Sun-Times columnist Jay Mariotti.

Rick Garcia, executive director of Equality Illinois, a local gay rights group, said the term Guillen used was "offensive."

Kevin Boyer, spokesman for the Gay Games, which take place in Chicago next month, said members of his organization were very disappointed to learn about Guillen's comments, which Boyer said were "anti-gay."

"Many children grow up in a society where calling someone a 'fag' is the most insulting term possible," Boyer said.

1. Guillen needs to apologize for his homophobic remarks.

Inexcusible. There are other insults one could use to describe someone you don't like. Why do some people (like Guillen) immediately reach for the homophobia in doing so?

Why would a manager, no matter the language used, get into this type of fray with a columnist. I'm not defending Mariotti, but one would think it would be best had Ozzie just said nothing.

It's easier to keep one's foot out of one's mouth than to pull it back out, after one has swallowed it whole.

On Edit: And by the way, he still hasn't apologized. If you see the video, he does the finger gesture for quotation marks when he says if there's anyone i "offended". It's pretty obvious he isn't really apologizing. He still thinks this is strictly about him and Jay.

It goes deeper than that. The issue is that he apparently is so homophobic that he can't think of any worse slur to use, and that says a lot about Gullien as a human being. He's not sorry he said it. He's sorry he got caught saying it.
