Gnarls Barkley - everything old is new again
Is it just me, or does this stuff sound very Gamble & Huff TSOP? With maybe a smidge of George Clinton's spacier stuff.

Yes, I'm ages behind the times, but I only just heard "Crazy" and loved it, and it brought me back to junior high, when everything on the radio was Gamble & Huff - "Smiling Faces", "Me and Mrs Jones", lots of others.

I have GOT to find a way to hear some new music - I had no idea stuff this good was out there....I guess I thought everything these days was Gangster Rap.

1. The sound is new to me
I consider myself pretty knowledgeable, so although I don't hear any blatant copying, it's possible that they're taking some obscure old school stuff and repackaging it, but since I'm not familiar with the original vibe, it sounds fresh and new to me.

Either way, I certainly appreciate their stuff...

2. Oh no! Not blatent copying! Just a similar vibe.
It's definitely got its own spin - different beats running underneath, new tunes, fresh approach, but it takes me right back to 1973 nonetheless.

7. While it's not "blatant copying" per se,
There is a pretty faithful cover of "Gone, Daddy, Gone" by the Violent Femmes on the album.

3. If you liked Gnarls Barkley have you tried Outkast? Cee-Lo is on
some of their stuff from his days with Goodie Mob.

And I'm a middle-aged California white girl who really likes some of this stuff that goes back to my days in junior high in the 70s.

5. Don't worry
nothing is really new. Everything gets recycled. It's the natural way of things.

6. Has that song gone huge in the US yet?
it was number 1 in the UK charts for yonks. Not suprising really as it's a song everyone seems to like. What get's me though is that every other person seems to have "Crazy" as their ringtone at present round here.

10. Good point - that's the only place I do hear it
For me, it's Air America all day on the computer, and then NPR or the Phillies at home (I'm hate to admit I listen to "The Big Talker 1210", but ONLY when the Phils are on).

I need to actually listen to some music stations - SO always has on SUNY or WRNB or any other station that plays stuff popular before 1988....
