What's your newest book?
As in the one purchased most recently.

This morning three books arrived for me:

The Trial Franz Kafka - first fiction for some time here.

and 2 from the Oxford History of Art series:

Early Mediaeval Architecture, Roger Stalley
Mediaeval Architecture, Nicola Coldstream.

They all look wonderful. :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Now what about you folks?

17. i've already made pots of money from cards
unfortunately it was from blackjack and the casinos have inexplicably tired of my patronage so i have been retired for some while, poker appears to be considerably more challenging although i'm making a little petty cash, i wouldn't say it's the most fascinating thing i've ever read to be honest

as far as architecture versus poker, heh, it's like the man said -- on the inside, we're all different :-)

was built in 1790. Well, at least the part I rent. The back of the house was added in 1830 (landlord's second home). I've been told that the 3 pillars on the front of the house are very unique and possibly the only existing example of that construction. I've found mention of 2-pillar construction in this and other books, but not 3-pillar.

30. You misunderstand me.
I don't think that feminism ever stopped - that's why I'd find it interesting to catch up with it. The course I was taking only touched on it tangentially, and didn't cover modern developments.

When I say "where it's still going" I don't mean "in what places it is still going" but "where its current directions are taking it".

You could start with absorbing the concept that a book entitled "The New Feminine Brain" doesn't have to be "feminist" simply because it focuses on something to do with women. Nor does a woman who insists on not being addressed in a respectful, non-sexist manner have to be on a "high horse."

number9dream by David Mitchell

and

The Information by Martin Amis

I've just recently come across Mr. Mitchell and am seriously loving his work. Unfortunately, he's rather young so he doesn't have the largest body of work available right now, and I've flown through his first novel, Ghostwritten, and am rapidly coming to the close of his second, number9dream.

Mr. Amis is another of my favorites, so I'm eager to get started on The Information once I finish number9dream.

I read it in like 4 hours. It is light on the history of the Rwandan genocide, but that was not the author's intent. It is a personal account of what happened to Ilibagiza, and how she connected with her spirituality through the worst of human conditions.

not a journalist, and said he wanted to tell their stories. plus, he lived the life, saturdays on the Terraces and the like. He was in Turin in (86, I think) when the Red Brigade went nuts after the Juventus match, on Sardinia for the Holland game riot in '90, and basically went nuts with them, without actually participating in the violence too much. It's basically a study of crowd theory, how you find a tipping point where the crowd goes from individuals to a mass of chaos.

68. I've never actually read any of Self's books.
I've seen him giving his views a million times, I ought to try him some time.

64. The Annotated Lolita and Mason & Dixon
Thoroughly enjoying the background material on Nabokov at the moment. A very engaging read, to say the least.

76. Seven Types of Ambiguity by Elliott Perlman
But I can't start it for a while because I'm still reading Europe Central by William Vollmann and it's a hefty one.

78. I just finished the Perlman book
Hurry hurry and read it so we can chat! I liked it immensely.

My most recent purchase is "The Best People in the World" by Justin Tussing. And I am loving it.

86. I will try, but I've still got about 500 pages to go...
About the Perlman, all the quotes on the book mention that it's a "thriller," but everyone who has recommended the book to me says not to let that get to me because it's not what you'd really call a thriller, but it does have suspensful or psychological thriller-esque elements to it. What do you make of that, if anything?

I've heard of the Best People in the World, but I don't know much about it, so thanks for a new "lead." :D

79. I just bought a book on JAPANESE GRAMMER..
Edited on Fri Jun-23-06 04:18 AM by scoey1953
MOSTLY cause I need to know about "particles"..they are driving me insane. As for something other than a text book, I repurchased a book I read years ago in High School. It was called
Hiroshima about the first Atomic Bomb dropped during World War II. It made me cry then, and it still does today.
