My husband's father claims vitamins gave him kidney stones.
I was just taking my own multivitamin this morning when I noticed Mr. Writer's unused vitamin bottle on the kitchen table. Mr. Writer does take his vitamins, but he told me the other day that when he was a child his father claimed that vitamins gave him kidney stones. Mr. Writer, luckily, doesn't believe his father.

Here's the "logic" behind this one: Because vitamins contain minerals, like zinc, the hard minerals lodged themselves in his kidneys, building up into large "stones" that, hence, required surgical removal.

Has anyone heard anything this ridiculous?

1. I've heard that large amounts of Vitamin C might cause kidney stones,

but I think that has been debunked.

Here's a Canadian website that discusses the possible reasons for kidney stones.

I'm all for multivitamins -- but only 500 mg. of Vit. C at the most. Any more ascorbic acid and I can get gastric reflux. Also, I don't chew or suck on Vitamin C anymore. It can really do a number on your tooth enamel, so I've heard from dentists.

You might try Googling "vitamins cause kidney stones" and see what you get.

In peace,

2. Gotta drink LOTS of fluids to flush the kidneys regardless.....
....they can build up if one doesn't ingest enough fluids...especially if they do strenuous outdoor activities and sweat a lot and don't rehydrate properly.
