The severe weather report from my corner of the northeast...
Edited on Tue Jun-27-06 08:41 PM by giant_robot
First, the good news: my parents' house, where I'm currently house-sitting, is safe because they were able to close the floodgate on our side of the river.

The bad news: the people on the other side of the river are fucked with a capital F-U-C-K because they weren't able to close the floodgate on their side of the river.

The other side is mostly industrial/commercial with a large part being occupied by a derelict factory, a trucking company, and a shopping center, but I really feel bad for the few residences over there. There must have at least 4-5 feet of water. Nothing life threatening, but DAMN. You'd think when the Army Corps of Engineers spends millions on dikes and floodgates, the damn things will WORK!

1. Yikes! I am at the entire other end of the state, and it's not much better
here! Where I am, in Saratoga County, seems to be okay and the rains stopped this afternoon. But the Albany news, which started at 5am, was on constantly until 1pm! And I subscribe to their weather e-mail alerts and got one every five minutes! It is really bad in some places locally, especially Schenectady, and Dolgeville, Little Falls and and Canajoharie, to the west, seem to be pretty much under water and there are reports of people being stranded and even a few washed away! The Thruway is closed as far as Syracuse...:-(

And we're told that Schoharie County is under a state of emergency until July 2nd! It's really scary out there! They told me to stay put and I did. The footage of Canajoharie reminded me of Katrina...:scared:

I'm glad to know that you're safe. It's really bad out there, I agree...:-(

2. Stay safe and know we're thinking of everyone in the flood areas.
The existing dams and state/county safety measures may not withstand a catastrophic act of nature that is, from news reports, the heaviest rainfall in approximately 200-years. It reminds me of H.Katrina, too. As a survivor, I've scolded myself today for thinking, Hey ya'll better call FEMA! Because it's not really funny. We should be able to count on our government in times of crisis. I just hope you never hear or see the jokes I have about 'refugees'. All the refugees of life deserve our love, understanding and any help we can give. Keep in touch with DU and let us know if there is anything we can do.

3. Hi txwhitedove!
Actually, things are OK in the immediate locality right now (Scranton, PA), but things are a little bit dicey just to the south (Wilkes-Barre, PA). The Susquehanna river is supposed to crest at about 38-39 feet, and the dikes in that area can handle up to 40 ft. They evacuated today, just in case, but keep your fingers crossed!

BTW, I am the OP. I just thought it was about time for a change. Sorry for any confusion!

5. Yikes! Wilkes-Barre is the city that we keep hearing about on the news!
And I am familiar with Scranton, as well. I used to travel with my grandmother to NC, every year, and Scranton and Wilkes-Barre were always on our itinerary. There is severe flooding in my part of NY, but things seem to be gradually getting better. Where I live has been okay, though this has not been the case for those in towns not far away.:-(

I sure hope that the water levels have gone down in your neck of the woods... They are just beginning to recede here, in Upstate NY, though we have also had some dicey times...:scared:

Are you saying that you changed your sn?

Best wishes, from one flooded area to another!:-(
