Hands Up! Who's seen "An Inconvenient Truth"?
I saw it tonight. Brilliant.

A LOT of reaction when Bush was shown being sworn in. We really hate him up here.

Well worth the admission.

1. I've been trying, but it's not playing anywhere near where I live. *sigh*
I keep checking IMDb to see if it's playing less than 100 miles away from me. Very frustrating. :-(

But I'm glad that you liked it so much. I'm definitely going to make the effort, when I can finally find it!:-)

2. It's just been released
so perhaps shortly it will come to a town near you. Here's hoping!

He mentioned the website www.climatechange.net which has a lot of information and statistics about climate change.

And although he wasn't mentioned in the movie, David Suzuki is another scientist/environmental activist who's been concerned about it for decades. The Sacred Balance is an amazing book and mini series.

21. Well, I just looked again and it's now playing in Vermont. I live in NY.
*sigh*

But thanks, this is good news. If "F 9/11" finally made it to my neck of the woods, there's a good chance that this film will too...:-)

And thanks so much for the link and the info. I'll have to check these out before I see the movie, that is, if we aren't swept away by the torrential rains and floods that are currently hitting us here in Upstate NY. Speaking of climate change!:scared:

24. Thanks! I'm about an hour north of Albany.
And it's playing in Bennington, according to IMDb. But they are flood warnings on the TV as I write this. People are being washed away around here! I think I'll take their advice and stay put, for the time being.:scared:

Let us know what you think of it...:-)

before I sit down to watch Al on the Daily Show I wanted to post some first impressions.

It's a whole lot of good information and well presented. I not sure anyone without some interest in the issue may have the patience to sit and absorb it all. In other words, I think it will inspire people who are already somewhat informed on the issue more than change opinions. If you can, bring a young person to see it. One point Al makes is how his interest was captured at an early age and he became dedicated to learning and teaching others.

The other thought I left with is that we can't afford to wait for leadership from the government on this issue. We need to start making the necessary adjustments in our own lives.

46. I'm sorry that I'm so late in replying to you.
I wrote a rather long reply, that same night, but I lost it...*sigh*

And I watched "The Daily Show" and thought that Al Gore was very good, more so than on Larry King, probably because Jon Stewart brings out the best (or worst) in people.:-)

I totally agree with you that anyone must be already somewhat engaged and aware of this to truly appreciate the message presented in the movie. It's entirely possible to stick your head in the sand, as Bush* is, saying he won't bother to see it. He may only be inconvenienced by the repercussions of global warming, but it will surely catch up with his children.:-(

And I am well aware that we need to begin doing things now that we should have started doing long ago. Here, in my neck of the woods, we aren't subject to hurricanes, but the weather has gotten pretty bad and unpredictable. There is major flooding, people were left homeless and a few washed away, this week.:-(

At the lake where my friend keeps his boat, where I just visited today, water levels are higher than they have been for 25 years, and an entire dock, in a nearby marina, washed away, with all the boats moored on it... These are scary times.:scared:

And we can't afford to wait for leadership from this government, since they are incapable of leading in anything, unless it is already on their agenda. Climate change is the least of their priorities. They have even managed, somehow, to blow off the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina and the continued suffering of its victims.:grr:

So I will see this movie and encourage that my friends do, as well. You're right. We can't afford to wait any longer.;(

My local news, which I attempted to include on Wednesday, and thus lost my post. Still bad news...:-(

52. Thank you for that thread.
It inspired me to try to get my mother to see this movie. My mother is a huge O'Reilly fan, and loves Bush*, but she only watches FOX News. I feel as if I'm banging my head up against a wall when I try to talk to her about anything. But she votes, so I'm going to give it another shot. It can't hurt. BTW, I also sent her Keith Olbermann's rant on how O'Reilly got the war atrocities of Malmedy, during WWII, completely backwards. If she's still speaking to me, I'll ask her if she's up for a movie... Thanks.:D

3. I saw it recently
I saw it with a group of people from my local Democratic club.

It is hard not to feel overwhelmed by what is happening with global warming.

And it is sad thinking of what was lost when * rather than the intelligent and articulate Al Gore ended up occupying the White House in 2001.

and considering there are so many who aren't listening...:-(

I liked the hopeful ending - how can we do our part. I think most liberals/progressives do anyway, but I'm always looking for more 'green' ways, and I hope others are, too. We can all do our part.

Unfortunately, the biggest contributors aren't doing theirs. :grr:

I agree about the part of your post. How much change would have been enacted, how many more people would be alive today...

I hope Binky's feeling better very soon. :-)

It's been here for a couple of weeks. Showing twice every evening, and twice on weekends. They must be getting a good crowd.

It was a beautiful Tuesday evening, and the house was half full. Considering the weather and the day of the week, I thought it was a good turnout. (it's also at an indie theatre, with nothing else playing)

13. True!
What an special man he is. I hope this is the tool to finally enact some change. (ok, maybe I'm being a bit idealistic...he's doing so much work

Another great one to see (on DVD, perhaps in your library?) is David Suzuki's The Sacred Balance (or any of his books). The man is truly amazing, and the great love and reverence he has for the environment - he's very well known here in Canada, but I don't know how well known (outside the green movement) he is internationally.

As for Gore, I always knew he had a sense of humor...he got such bad press in 2000 for being too "wooden", I knew that was bullshit. So it's good that the rest of the public could see this side of him

don't get me on about the oilsands.

Destructive as hell, and the cost to produce this oil -'dirty oil' - will be monumental, both on a monetary and ecological standpoint.

Add in the factor that Ft Mac has more than doubled in size since I lived there - 1997. In less than a decade, it's doubled. Yes, all because of the oilsands.

However, Alberta oversees infrastructure - and hasn't been planning or budgeting money towards the changes needed up there - it's a city that hasn't had a lot of improvements infrastructure wise, and you can imagine the once town now turned 3rd largest city in the province, using roads for a city half the size. http://www.cbc.ca/canada/edmonton/story/2005/04/04/ed-fort-mcmurray-oil20050404.html

The highway up to Ft Mac from here is notoriously treacherous. It resulted in this:http://www.cbc.ca/canada/calgary/story/2005/05/23/ed_crash20050523.html (having travelled that highway a number of times, it could get scary, especially when dealing with the huge logging or transport trucks. Some areas of the highway barely have any shoulders - it's a 2 lane highway for the most part, 4 in some areas.

How about the health problems associated with it:
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/edmonton/story/2006/03/10/ed-fortchip20060310.html
http://www.cbc.ca/story/science/national/2006/05/05/fort-chipewyan.html

Also, crime has risen 25% in one year. Why? Young, transient males who work on the rigs.

And the 'economy is so hot' :puke: the average price of a one bedroom apartment, unfurnished, is $1600 per month. Average homes are around $440,000. IF you can find vacancy. http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/2006/03/15/work-camps-fort-mcmurray060315.html

It's NORTHERN ALBERTA, THERE'S PISS ALL TO DO THERE, and the winters are fricking cold! It was -40c/-40F almost every night in the winter, at least when I was there.

I've gotta laugh, however - McDonalds had raised the rate to $14/hr last I heard, to try and keep workers. (unfortunately, that only means, before taxes, f/t they would be making $2240 per month. Average 1 bedroom - $1600 per month. Even at $14/hr, it still just even begin to cut it.

The oil companies are also bringing in lower cost workers (ie from South America and China) so they don't have to pay as much.:eyes:

It doesn't help that we have a Conservative cretin, running the province. He's all for big business, however, he's not getting the fair share of royalties for the province - yep, as if they need help. Subsidizing fucking oil companies...:nuke:

It's all a big fucking mess. We need better leadership in this province, and tight environmental standards. Pffft..if that's ever going to happen. :grr:

There are more I'm trying to find, but the above is a great start.

No, I don't think we dislike Bush as much as NYC...just pointing out that Alberta, famous for its rednecks, even hate Bush. I've have yet to talk to someone who has a favourable view of him (other than a few business folk who want to cozy up to the US).

18. Hey billy!
Guess what? The theatre wasn't -10 after all!!

Perhaps, since it was an environmental movie, it was just a bit on the cool side, but not freezing.

Mind you, it's an indie theatre, that shows all these great documentaries. Perhaps they're not into frostbiting or chillblaining their patrons, they're part of the 'green revolution'. :D

I - and many others on this thread - are highly recommending it.

I'm also throwing Dr David Suzuki's name in here, he's an unbelievable man. Tireless environmental activist, and since he's had a science show on CBC for 30 some years, he's been explaining the science to us all along. He's a national treasure.
