I just took my youngest to Build a Bear so she could spend
her gift card that she got for her birthday. There was a birthday party there with six little girls, very, very cute. HOwever, What on earth where their parents thinking? Ireland, Marin, Shoenike, Linden, Agelius, Sarah.

:wtf: NOrmally, I am totally live and let live, but what kind of a life do these parents think these kids will have with these names? (Not Sarah, obviously) Originality is one thing, having to pronounce your name for everyone for the rest of your life is something else.

I guess I'm old.

Signed,

Elizabeth's mom.

Was Shoenike pronounced Shen-okie or Shoe-nigh-kee?

And how do you pronouce Agelius?

Ireland and Linden aren't awful, just rather obnoxious.

So, I think it's been around for a long time. I however like it because my idol as a kid was Trevor Linden of the Vancouver canucks.

18. He would love it. It is really, really cute.
He could pick whatever bear he wants, kiss the heart they put inside, and pick out clothes. Be prepared to lay out about $30 US.

My niece, who was 3 at the time, went with me last year and walked through the door and yelled "It's the Build A Bear Workshop, where dreams come true".

An adman's delight that kid. She picked a bear, got it roller skates and named it Ed. Go figure. We don't know anyone named Ed.

21. Linden is a crappy little town in Central California
In fact, I'd say that these parents have a penchant for geography.

Ireland? Big green island (home of my ancestors!)
Marin? County/City in northern California
Shoenike? Ok, please tell me this was a joke
Linden? Crappy little town near Stockton California
Agelius? Sounds like some marketroid made up name for a tech company
Sarah? The only normal name of the bunch. I wanted to name my daughter Sarah, but the wife had others in mind.

19. Those kids are going to have trouble with their names all their
lives. I worked in college/university financial aid for twenty years and saw plenty of bizarre names. Some of the students who had those names were proud of them and many were not. One girl, whose name was Hezekiah, said, "As soon as I graduate, I'm changing my name to Jennifer! I want something normal!" I don't blame her a bit.

My mother decided that she didn't want any problems or nicknames for me, my sister, or my brother, and we all have names that have normal spellings and pronunciations. Thank you, Mom! :applause:

20. That's how I feel. I have a pretty common first name, but I
went my entire single life with a very uncommon last name and was continually having to spell it.

When I was teaching high school, I actually had kids who wanted me to call them something other than what was on the roll, so that they could fit in a bit better.

I'm all for originality, but not when it comes to someone else. And, your child isn't you. He or she is a totally separate person.

22. I had an easy-to-pronounce-and-spell last name before I got
married. I didn't want to give that up! I was going to keep my own name, but family pressures at the height of the wedding madness forced me to give in. Hubby's last name is only six letters, but people CANNOT spell or pronounce it correctly to save their lives. :eyes: It's really not THAT hard, though.

23. Oh good grief - what were the parents thinking?
Couldn't little Ireland's parents at least have opted for Erin? Lindon makes me think of either Unter den Linden or Lyndon Baynes Johnson - not a girl. Marin - well, uh, ok, go ahead and name your kid for a California county. Agelius - sounds like a weapons system. Don't get me started on Shoenike - were her parents hoping for a sponsorship deal to pay for college?

29. No. It was for $25, but I let her get an outfit.
She really loves these darn things, and it is expensive, but it brings her a lot of joy. She doesn't ask for much in the way of toys. She's content to draw and stuff, so this isn't a big deal to me.

31. I have relatives who named their daughter an awful name --
You've probably never heard it before; it is not at all pretty, harsh sounding, bizarrely spelled. Why? Why? That is your first act as a parent -- it should be about the baby, not about showing the world how frickin' avante garde and out there you are.

(I won't say the name because I'm afraid they'll see this.)
