Richard Donner takes back Superman II for a directors cut
Edited on Wed Jun-28-06 05:48 PM by Cannikin
According to Dreamwatch, Warner Bros. has given Richard Donner the go-ahead to restore and release a new cut for Superman II. The original Superman, along with Superman III, Superman IV: The Quest For Peace, and possibly Supergirl are also set for Special Edition DVDs.

For those who are unaware, Donner has 60 percent of Superman II shot before being fired due to creative differences and being replaced by Richard Lester. A good amount of Donner's scenes that were not shown in the theatrical version were shown in the 1984 ABC television broadcast. In a 2004 interview, Margot Kidder claimed that Donner filmed enough scenes to make his own cut. The interview triggered a large rally by many fans for Warner Bros. to release a full cut of Donner's vision. Apparently, they listened.

This news excites me! Superman II is one of my favorite comic book movies and it deserves the proper treatment it is about to receive. With Superman Begins on the way and now this great news, it looks like 2006 is going to be a great year for The Man of Steel!

2. I saw Superman II at the Fountain Valley Drive-In . . . 27 times.
It was a weird time for me and I needed an escape. I usually took Weinerschnitzel hot dogs or a Round Table pizza with me, along with Dr Pepper. (t'was the beginning of my serious obesity)

Great movie. I loved it. :hi:

3. I work for Warner Bros.
I work in the Feature Mastering Department and I can tell you that this is true. I can also tell you that I have seen the Donner version and it is awesome.

4. Good News - I'd love to see how Donner restores his footage
and cuts it. Thought II a little too campy, and wish there had been more of Lois & Superman's love scene in the Fortress of Solitude. Uh huh, great family movie? I seem to remember there was a bit of protest that we had an unmarried Superman & Lois doing the deed. And that was the free love era. Imagine how the fundie would howl now! Surprised we haven't heard some protest of this Lois shacking up - and being a single mom!

The big thing I hated about II was that Superman had to give up his powers to love Lois - damn you Jor-El! Thought that a slap against women.

BTW, just got back from Superman Returns - loved it. Put my extensive thoughts on it in another thread.
