I lived in MN every summer growing up...still visit up there every few years. Beautiful! Was in the Brainerd/Nisswa area on the north shore of Gull Lake.

I used to work for a fund raising group, and I had to call nationwide. One time someone stopped me mid-sentence to ask me if I was from Canada. :P

9. I know; when I was an exchange student as a teenager
I went to NZ with a girl from MN. She made a big impression and I remember liking very much the way she spoke. At the time I was new to the States from Canada, so it was even more pronounced to my ears.

I know PLENTY of people here for whom that accent is *not* overblown. <---(That's a big O like in boat, ya know. :D)

The accent is different, depending on the part of the state. The closer you get to Canada, the heavier it gets.

29. I've grown up in Tennessee, and have been to MN to watch my....
...beloved Vikings play, and really never paid that much attention to the "accents". People are people.

If they're nice, they're my kind of people, if not...well, not so much. And I've always found the people of Minnesota to be great. I love the place.

I think I'll make a big gaboon of potato salad...up here in Brainerd.

And regarding the movie Fargo...having lived in both Fargo for many years and now living in Brainerd...those accents were pretty lame.

Nobody in Brainerd would ever say "I'm the Police Chief from up Brainerd." Never heard it.

When the daughter says "Dad? You stayin' for supperrrrr?" That was pretty authentic.

"Pretty darn good! Want some?" -------best line of the movie.
