What songs/music make you feel like you are in heaven?
Edited on Thu Nov-30-06 10:25 PM by nytemare
You know! Those songs that make you close your eyes, wave your hand like you are the composer, those voices that send chills down your spine and make you glad that you were alive and had the opportunity to hear absolute musical bliss.

For me, the songs would include Debussy's Claire de Lune and 1st Arabesue, Holst's Neptune, the score from Thin Red Line, and much of the music from the COSMOS series, most notably the theme, Billy Holliday's "You Go to my Head", some of Sheila Chandra's music, and many others.

These songs just transport me to another place. The power of music is amazing.

1. Luka Bloom's "Exploring the Blue"
Inspired by The Big Blue, a film from the '80s with Jean Reno.

Dreamy, both the movie and the song.

3. And I'm already checking out Sheila Chandra.
I love getting introduced to new music.

Billie Holiday, of course, is a universe in and of herself.

4. Sheila Chandra has a voice that is pure velvet.
"Ever so Lonely" is her best. Her best of album has a track where she actually sings a cadence. It is amazing.

9. Thank you!
I promised myself this morning I'd stop buying new music for a while...

Sigh.

I think I'm going to have to break my oath.

5. Anything sung by Mario Lanza.
To me, he puts Caruso and Pavarotti to shame. Also, although I hate to admit it, "Close to You" by Karen Carpenter. I used to sing it to my son when he was a baby, and whenever I hear it, it takes me back to the time when my 35 yo son was young enough to hold in my arms and kiss his little fingers and toes.

12. Debussy's music has an amazing atmosphere.
When I hear Claire de Lune, I picture myself sitting in the Van Gogh painting "Starry Night" under the big cypress, looking at the fuzzy stars.

13. Um.... does indie-rock count?
Edited on Fri Dec-01-06 01:26 AM by MysticalChicken
I'm not really into classical, although I do LOVE Carl Orff's "O Fortuna." Also "Adagio for Strings" although I forget who composed that one.

Anywhoozle. Mine:

Anything by http://www.myspace.com/arcadefire">Arcade Fire, especially "Crown of Love," (when I finally get Funeral that song will be playing on a near-endless loop) "Wake Up," "Rebellion Lies," and "Neighborhood #3: Power Out." Arcade Fire is my favorite band.

Nearly everything I've ever heard by the http://myspace.com/thedecemberists">Decemberists, especially "The Bachelor and the Bride," "Odalisque," "The Infanta," "Sons and Daughters," and "We Both Go Down Together".... actually, I could go on... I only have two of their CDs, though, 'cause I'm poor. I want them all.

Everything off The Cure's Disintegration CD.

I have only heard about maybe 10-15 of his songs, but http://myspace.com/badlydrawnboy">Badly Drawn Boy is beautiful.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra's version of "Carol of the Bells" is made of win.

14. anything Deborah Harry is singing and
most of the Ramones' songs and Joan Jett's music.

Otherwise, I do love the song "Fur Elise" and I love "Just Like Heaven" by the Cure.

I swear I think they took a smidgeon of every angel's voice and created Deborah Harry's voice. That woman can sing like none other in my world.

Also, I love the music in the original Wizard of Oz too.

20. "Pour Down Like Silver" by Richard & Linda Thompson
The album was recorded when Richard was "new" to Sufism, with lovely vocal harmonies & Scottish/Moorish guitar. Dreamy & meditative.

Except for the song "Hard Luck Stories"--a shining example of Richard's snarky songwriting. (For those who aren't quite ready for Heaven.)

26. Aaah, Portishead.
I used to love putting Portishead in the player, turning all the lights off and having a little drink. Alone or not so alone, didn't matter much.

I had no idea the singer was Beth Gibbons. Is Portishead still around, or does she sing solo now?

28. She Sings Solo And With Some Others
I think Portishead is supposed to have a new album

from WIki:

There were rumours of a third album to be published, possibly called Alien, but Portishead's official site dismissed the rumours: "We have noticed that there is some confusion on an album release called "Alien". Please be aware that this is NOT a Portishead release. The band are in the studio working on new material now but no release dates are scheduled as yet. Keep an eye on the site as any release plans will of course be announced here first!" <2> As of October 2006, no new album has been released.

Portishead did show the first signs that their third album was progressing by posting two new tracks on their myspace page in August 2006. However these were subsequently dismissed by Geoff Barrow as 'doodles'<3>.
