Uh-oh. My furnace is having trouble igniting itself.
I have noticed this for a week or so now. I dare say this is bad news. :(

1. It seems as if the electronics have gone mental more than any physical problem
It will spark the igniter and then stop before it gets the gas on. So it will shut the gas off, spark the lighter again, stop sparking before the gas valve opens again, shut the gas off again, and tries again and again and again until finally it keeps sparking long enough to light the gas.

But when I just turned the hot water faucett, it ignited immediately. Wierd. :wtf:

13. Depending How Old It Is
it could be electronic, or it could be something about your burner positioning, or as someone said, it could be something on your burner.

The water thing, can you replicate that? If not probably a coincidence. (but a wierd one)

:wtf:

24. It's not quite 5 years old
It's intermittent. So far it hasn't actually failed to ignite totally.

38. Sounds Like It Is Electronic
I had a 30 year old Lennox that we replaced last year, that old thing worked well right up until it quit working well.

But every year, the burners would get out of alignment slightly and they just had to be adjusted and then it would work fine. So maybe it didn't work well right up until it quit working, but it worked!

2. Hi Billy!
Uh-oh!

You better see if you can get that fixed, first thing Monday morning.

The gas company is the best place to start. They can see if anything
dangerous( don't mess with carbon monoxide!) is going on.

Good luck, Billy.
I hope it gets fixed ASAP.

5. Actually, it may not.
I had something like this with my propane logs. The cost of someone coming out to look at it was included with my gas price. He just made some adjustmnets and blew the dust out of the sensitive areas, and didn't charge me.
BUT, I was home alone........

It could be something as simple as a bad relay or a dirty connection. I'm hoping it's simple and cheap.

11. It's probably just fluff on the electrode, right?
But last time I had it "serviced" I paid £100 for somebody to take the front off it and vaccuum it out.

That looks like good work if you can get it, thought I.

14. Oh, shit.
I'm sorry, Billy. That's awful. I hope you get your furance working again soon.

My mom lives in Central Illinois. They had a horrible storm a few days ago. She, along with thousands of other people, lost power because of the storm...including, naturally, the furance. It was 30 degrees as a high the past few days. Luckily (very luckily) the power to her house was restored yesterday. Others aren't so lucky.

I'll be thinking about them and about you. I hope you get the furnance working again. Now is NOT the time to be without heat.

17. It's sometimes requiring several attempts to light the gas
in a nutshell.

It will spark the igniter but not for long enough, so it will give up and then try again. Sometimes is requires many attempts before it gets the gas lit.

It's a Euro-style "combi" boiler which does not heat a tank of hot water - the hot water to the faucetts is heated on demand. It also heats water for a set of radiators.

35. Hubby says...
Could be a "grounding" issue - that there is not a good ground back to the control board.

Or...the spark gap is too far away for it to ignite.

If you have any other info or questions, let me know. He says he's leaning toward the grounding problem.

I wish I was a furnace expert...but I'm not. The only trouble we have ever had is a spider building a web over the intake. Have you looked to see if something is blocking the valve?

Or those people they have on the news and in the papers - "analysts" they call them. Doesn't matter whether they're doing politics, or economics, stock market, whatever, these people can basically say anything they like and it never matters whether they get everything wrong! How cool is that?
