RELATIVES QUESTION: My grandmother, Ida, had a younger brother, Bill, who had an only son, Loren.
Edited on Sat Dec-09-06 02:45 PM by Radio_Lady
Bill was an uncle to my mother, Estelle, Ida's eldest daughter.

I am Estelle's only daughter, and Bill was my great uncle.

Bill was also Loren's father, and grandfather to his two children. (Loren is just a few years younger than I am.)

HERE'S THE QUESTION:

What is Loren's relationship to me? And what, if any is my relationship to his two adult sons? I've wondered about this for years!

There must be a simple answer. My husband and I are arguing about this and I don't know who's right.

Please help us if you can. Thanks, and have a happy holiday season!

In peace,

Radio_Lady

3. Yes
According to a genealogy relationship chart. Find your common ancestor - that would be the parent of your great uncle, go from there.

genealogy is a fun hobby. I've found that style chart was easiest for me to understand.

5. Yes, Loren is your 1st cousin
his kids are 1st cousins once removed. His grandkids are 1st cousins twice removed. Your kids, if any, would be 2nd cousins to his kids and 2nd cousins once removed to his grandkids.

14. Answered some of mine, too
The whole 1st cousin, 2nd cousin, etc thing always confused me before. :D

15. Me, too
Mine's huge. I've got 40 first cousins alone. Also, there is a blurring of generations - for example, I'm closer in age to my niece than my next oldest sibling. My mother had a niece and nephew older than her. I've got 3rd cousins older than me...so the whole business was confusing from the start.

9. Slightly off topic! Know the crazy lyrics to "I'm My Own Grandpa"?
I heard a cowboy singer do this tune when we were in Tucson last winter:
Let's see this this all holds up when compared to the charts, above...

************************************

Many many years ago when I was twenty three,
I got married to a widow who was pretty as could be.

This widow had a grown-up daughter
Who had hair of red.
My father fell in love with her,
And soon the two were wed.

This made my dad my son-in-law
And changed my very life.
My daughter was my mother,
For she was my father's wife.

To complicate the matters worse,
Although it brought me joy,
I soon became the father
Of a bouncing baby boy.

My little baby then became
A brother-in-law to dad.
And so became my uncle,
Though it made me very sad.

For if he was my uncle,
Then that also made him brother
To the widow's grown-up daughter
Who, of course, was my step-mother.

Father's wife then had a son,
Who kept them on the run.
And he became my grandson,
For he was my daughter's son.

My wife is now my mother's mother
And it makes me blue.
Because, although she is my wife,
She's my grandmother too.

If my wife is my grandmother,
Then I am her grandchild.
And every time I think of it,
It simply drives me wild.

For now I have become
The strangest case you ever saw.
As the husband of my grandmother,
I am my own grandpa!

10. Loren is your mother Estelle's 1st cousin, and your 1st cousin once removed.
Loren's sons are your 2nd cousins.
