I know this is silly, but did I do the right thing?
in the apartment across the way there happens to be some person(s) who leave a shopping cart RIGHT behind someone's car. Like right behind it. Like, what, the poor sucker in that car has to move that cart in order to drive off?

There's only a small backlane there and there are several cars parked from a few apartments. This cart could smash into somebody's car.

I finally got the name of the property managers and called them. Told them somebody stupid from this address tends to do this quite often. (it's happened a few times) Maybe they will do something, I even left a note for the caretaker there to maybe speak to the person doing this?

Gawd, I'm becoming one of those anal apartment dwellers but I don't care.
Shopping carts left all over the place are one of my pet peeves. I don't know, it's the sense that somebody else is expected to clean up the place that really annoys me. You brought it away from the store, you can return it. It's only 1/2 block away. :(

1. First I thought, of course, then I thought no
I am so wishy-washy, but now I think I would have left it to the driver of the car to do their own complaining. If the shopping cart person is leaving it behind their own car, they are not hurting anybody. Maybe they are waiting for their kid or spouse to take it back since they had to do the shopping in the first place.

3. When they leave it behind, it's already half into the backlane....
it's a tight squeeze. I think they are ignorant. It's a nice, warm day and the store is 1/2 block away. Are people really that lazy.

And no, I won't return it. :) Done that enough.

8. Yes, the old woman leaving that cart
has completely worn herself out just by going shopping. Or it could be a disabled vet and it hurts him to walk that far. Your so judgemental  :P

5. They are not hurting anybody
They're stealing property, though. The cart doesn't belong to them. And is it normal just to leave your crap lying around?

7. it America, it is all too normal
I have people using my yard as a mini-dump all of the time, and I regularly pick up trash all around the block as I am walking my dog. Since, as you said, it is not theirs, they are quite willing to just leave it lying around.

2. I say it was your choice - either way is fine.
You don't have a legal obligation to intervene.

However, you're perfectly entitled to complain about safety issues. Carts are dangerous in parking lots. It doesn't matter whose car it was or why they were leaving the cart there.

4. We have that problem in my complex too
Drives me up the wall. I don't have a license or car, so you know what I do? Carry a basket in the grocery store. lol. I am a frequent shopper, but that's fine by me.

Also, I'm the one who picks up the grounds in my apts. So that means it is either me, or the maintenance guy who takes the carts back up to Marsh.

6. You could call the store, and tell them the person who keeps stealing their carts
lives at such-and-such address. Or you could find out who the cart-user is - perhaps they are elderly or disabled and are incapable of returning the cart or placing it somewhere else...

This cart user is either selfish and inconsiderate or in need of help; they should receive aid or a comeuppance, as appropriate...

14. I'd go out and at least turn it on its side.
That way it won't blow into anyone's car.

17. I'm beginning to feel some empathy for that poor shopping cart......
he didn't ask to be in the middle of this age old battle between the forces of good (that's me, don't laugh) and EEEEEEEEE-Vil (pronounced the way the late Sir Alec Guiness did)

But, in the end, there will be one winner, moi!!! :bounce:

Count on it. ;)
