Apple Vs. P.C.
Are Apple computers really better than personal computers? For years I have heard a number of people say that Apple computers are better than personcal computers. Now there are the commmerical that claim that Apple computers can perform many application like playing music, making videos, and working without freezing better than personal computers. Are all the claims made in the commericals correct? Do Apple computers perform better than personal computers?

1. From a user perspective, Apple is better ...
the OS, based on Unix is more stable and runs just as good, if not better, than Windows. Apple hardware is also great, but that's in part due to the fact that Apple makes the machines, as opposed to PC manufacturers, who can build machines using different hardware components.

The downside is that the machines are more expensive than PCs, both desktop and laptop, and that there is no guarantee that a given company will write a Mac version of software they offer in Windows.

In the end, if you can afford it and deal with some "incompatibility" issues, I'd get the Mac. But if you need to use or can only afford Windows, then Windows it is.

2. I've had significant experience with both.

Apples because I wanted to, PCs because I had to (at work). Apples are better. Lots better. Worth-the-extra-money better.

3. I agree
I have owned a Mac for 15 months and never had a problem with it. It has never froze up, crashed or gotten viruses. And I just plug in devices and they work. No messing around with drivers or anything else. iLife comes with each Mac computer and lets you do multi-media stuff pretty easily. I think that Macs are head and shoulders better than Intel/Windows.

8. My boss' husband just returned 3 printers because they wouldn't work
with a Mac. I've done the same with cameras, scanners, and MP3 players not named "IPod".

The "driver free" rhetoric is total BS.

5. I switched to Mac about four four years ago
Would never go back. Even my formerly PC fanatic partner has come round and will be buying a Mac when it's time to replace his current laptop. More stable, still virus and worm free compared to PCs, and great software at least for what I do - writing and photography. Also good if you are into music.

It's just a more elegant system and I've found that the build quality is hard to beat. I have no experience with the new Intel Macs though.

6. If you NEVER want to upgrade, perhaps
Otherwise, you're fucked.

Personally, I've used Windows XP on my laptop for three years and never had any problems.

7. 1/2 of the claims in Apple's commercials are blatant lies.
Which is not to say Apple's are bad - only that they lie in their adverts. PC do not freeze all that often. I use a computer every day of my life and I haven't had one that's under 4 years old freeze on me in years. I think it's mostly a preference issue - Do you like Apple's interface or Windows'? Do you play video games (if so, get a PC)?

11. exactly
my PC hasn't locked up in a long long time, im talking years. also the thing about how you can "do more" with macs, total BS youll find an equilivent program for PCs for pretty much everything.

And the security issues are mostly a fualt of high popularity, which would you rather rob all the convience stores in a town or all the graveyards in a town(morality aside)

10. My roommate's Mac crashes frequently
I've always heard this "Macs are SO much more stable than PC's" line, but I've been using PCs since the early 90s and have rarely, if ever, had any problems. I've been doing some stuff with my roommate's Mac (to see if I'd be interested in getting one), and, as I say, it crashes A LOT.

That's my experience.

16. for PCs the problem is
the fact that most programs are made "third party" so one program can be total crap while another runs extremly well.

17. EXACTLY
problem with mac people is they fail to realise that there isn't one single "PC" company, its several different entities, you got hardware companies, some make video cards some make harddrives, then you got microsoft with is windows, some attached programs like office and maybe a few games, and so on

if you buy a house and the lights keep burning out after an hour of use do you deside to get an apartment, or buy a different brand of light?

... from someone with a linux-looking penguin by their name. :)

Linux is a good operating system for people a whole lot smarter than me.

Using Windows XP now.

18. UH OH, Bloody Computer War Warning!
I use both a PowerMac G5 (2.3 dual core) and a Windows PC (dual-core intel) at home and both are good machines, but I prefer using the Mac. I bought it last January and have used it as my primary machine ever since, it's perfect for my photography and has handled everything that I've thrown at it.

I have had some unexplained lockups with both machines, but the Mac is a bit more stable than my Windows PC.

22. So far the flames are surprisingly quiet.
My own preference is PC (I needed one to run a some lab equipment to do a grad school project) and I've used that laptop for seven months now and it hasn't frozen once--no viruses or any such problems either. Necessity and proce were what motivated me.

If you have different needs, wants or motivations I think the Mac would be swell.

25. Dunno...
They say Apple is easier to use, yet lots of people at CompUSA seem to ask the customer service (aka 'Returns') desk or the Apple corner all sorts of dumb, obvious questions.

Mustn't be that easy.

They say Apple is easier with digital cameras and printers. Hmmm, some people with the Epson Stylus 2200 and Sony Mavica CD 500 weren't always happy...

They say Apple is faster.

Yet before the switch to Intel, Steve Jobs was hyping up Mac's performance on the Motorola chip. Since switching to Intel, oh now it's the other way around.

Also consider OS X is basically a modified FreeBSD and voila: Buy a $400 PC and add FreeBSD (or Ubuntu, either is free to download) and voila: You've got essentially a $1000 Mac.

I can't wait to see when Apple ports back to the open source community what it's taken. It's all too easy to make KDE or GNOME to look like their user interface...

Sorry to be a cynic. Apple is just a name.
