My parents had to put their kitty down last night.
My poor dad was heartbroken, sobbing on the phone. My mom hadn't quite grasped it yet I think.
He was such a sweet beautiful cat, a Balinese, and only 3 years old. Suddenly got sick Friday and was having seizures at the vet last night so they had to put him down.
I'm so sad, he was their BABY - one of the few things my mom could focus on (she has early dementia). I think my dad really needed the playfulness and energy around the house
because he deals with so much.
Damn.

3. I am so sorry for their loss
maybe you could give them a new kitten for Christmas? Esp. since it helps your mom with her illness and takes your dad's mind off the daily pressure?

5. Most of the time you can't "replace" a pet who dies
but in this case, I agree with Miss HC -- an ASAP kitten might just be the ticket to help your parents

8. I wouldn't have recommended it
if it hasn't been for the problems her parents have.

It's very hard losing a member of the
family. I know, I've had to deal with this
many,many times.

Maybe, when they are ready, your parents
can adopt a new kitty that needs a good home.
Their kitty can never be replaced, but there may
be room in their hearts for a new little guy, again,
when they are ready.

The grieving process takes time, though.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your
parents at this difficult time.

9. I'm so sorry!
What a hard time this must be for your parents. I agree with the others here about giving a home to a needy kitty. A trip to the local shelter in the next few days may be in order.

I'm really sorry for you guys, especially your Dad. Whatever someone's faults, if they have a heart for animals they get a gold star in their copybook from me.

I have six pets of my own, all foundlings, and I'll most likely have to deal with something like this six times. I dread it but, at the same time, I hope they go before me. I'd rather deal with the loss of them then think of them dealing with the loss of me.

14. Thanks to everyone who responded.
I had to go to work right after I posted this and just got a chance to look back at it.
I really appreciate all your kind thoughts.

I spoke with my parents tonight and my dad sounded better. My mom is sad, but already looking for a kitten so I think they'll be one there by the time we get down to Atlanta for Christmas.
Again, it means so much to have your support. Thanks again.

17. Just saw this.
I think it's great that your Mom's already focused forward on another lil' critter to love and be loved by. It'll hopefully, help your Dad too.

Having had many loving critters, everyone that prances over the Rainbow Bridge leaves a mark on my heart.
That's just the way it is.

I do have to share this though. I have a 4 year old G-grandaughter who lives with my daughter. There were 2 cats in the household and the little one was especially fond of the Russian Blue. Long story short - he had to be put down last week. Sometime in the aftermath, Mia was asked if it made her sad. She smiled and said: "No, he's in Cat heaven! We're all gonna go there!"

25. I am sorry, especially such a young cat who obviously gave them
joy. I think if you got them a kitty for Xmas, they'd like one. Not as a replacement but to honor the kitty who died

Poem For Cats

And God asked the feline spirit
Are you ready to come home?
Oh, yes, quite so, replied the precious soul
And, as a cat, you know I am most able
To decide anything for myself.

Are you coming then? asked God.
Soon, replied the whiskered angel
But I must come slowly
For my human friends are troubled
For you see, they need me, quite certainly.

But don't they understand? asked God
That you'll never leave them?
That your souls are intertwined. For all eternity?
That nothing is created or destroyed?
It just is....forever and ever and ever.

Eventually they will understand,
Replied the glorious cat
For I will whisper into their hearts
That I am always with them
I just am....forever and ever and ever.

27. It is sad when pets die that young
I had a cat that died when he was only 7 years old
I loved my Mini. And cried like a baby.
When they die young you feel robbed
I am sure you did the right thing. It is to me a last act of love.

Kitty was so young.

My best to you and your parents. Not easy losing a kitty anytime, but especially during the holiday season. I would be like your dad.

30. He was SO healthy too.
Right up until Friday. They never figured out what happened to him. It was a real shock for them.
I had a young cat run over several years ago right in front of my home. It took me weeks to get over it.
I sat out on the front porch every evening and lit a candle for him. And I have a houseful of animals. My
parents are a one pet at a time household, so I think it's worse for them.

My bet is that my mom will have a new kitten before the week is out. She needs somebody in her life that doesn't care if she's confused or what year it is.
