Music appropriate for a 10-year old girl?!
This thread isn't nearly as sexy as that "what song(s) do you like to get busy to" thread (Closer!), but it would help me with a gift for my niece. I bought her an iPod Shuffle and wanted to download some fun tunes. What are kids listening to these days? Her Mom listens to country, her Dad to classic rock, and her aunts' tastes are all over the place. I'd like to stay clear of the Y's (Britney, Hillary, Lindsay, etc.) and introduce her to music from all genres - any decade.

Any tunes that bring back fond memories for you from when you were a kid? Puff the Magic Dragon and Georgie Girl do it for me. I have some Putamayo and Tom Paxton CDs I can lift from. Maybe even some Motown. Belle & Sebastian and The Guillemots have some catchy tunes that I think she'd like. She likes to watch American Idol with her Mom, but I want to expand her horizons beyond Clay Aiken and Taylor Hicks. ;-)

Thanks for any ideas!

1. I remember loving Cyndi Lauper at that age.
My kids aren't quite that old, but they like Jack Johnson.

3. Duh on my part - the obvious "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun"!
Thanks - that's one more to the list. I don't quite "get" Jack Johnson, but I'll dig around for something.

2. I heard
from my 9 yr old that the "High School Musical" soundtrack is popular. The "Curious George" one gets a lot of play around here too. I'm not sure what else she is listening to.

5. I bought the high school musical soundtrack for my daughter this year ..
(she's 12) and it was one that she asked for.

Pretty much any soundtrack to a movie they like is a sure bet.
My kids LOVE the soundtrack to Chicken Little and the Shaggy Dog.

redone for rugrats thing, Retro?

I think kids should hear the real thing. But what do I know - we played Capt. Beefheart and Robyn Hitchcock and Tuvan throat singing tunes for our kid. But he does love the Beatles.

37. I love Fountains of Wayne
that guy is a superb pop tunesmith!

I just don't get why everything has to be watered down. Of course all my music fanatic cronies have been playing their kids the widest variety of music - Meridith Monk, Coltrane, weird Balkan tunes, Anonymous 4,Handel, African drumming, what have you, pretty much out of the gate.

not for her to tell me she wants skanky Britney's latest CD. She gets enough current pop culture from other sources - I'm trying to broaden her horizons.

I'd download some songs from Itunes and give her a mixed CD.

Cyndi Lauper, Pink, ABBA, Carol King, etc. mixed with Disney Channel songs (if she likes that sort of thing)

19. I'll probably just give her the Shuffle as an Xmas gift,
then when I have more time burn a CD just for fun. Those first four suggestions are good, but I'll probably stay away from Disney. She gets enough Disney from other sources.

My son was probably that age when he wore out the tape of The Golden Age of Wireless.
REM was another of his gateway bands.
