Can someone explain airline policies to me?

My brother lives in Denver and was supposed to fly home today for Christmas. Understandably, his flight is cancelled, but he can't get another flight to Minneapolis until Christmas Day???? I realized it's a busy time of year, but does that seem a little extreme to anyone else?

1. I think when the airlines cancel as many flights as they had to

because of the storm in Denver, it does take days to get back on track.

I know on 9/11 for instance, it took a friend of mine a week to get home from London.

2. airlines

Due to the weather conditions, they will rebook on their airline only
if it was a mechanical delay, then they have to book on other airlines.
They will get all standbys first, and then the confirmed reservations

and with all the cancellations, everyone on those planes are scrambling for seats.

i think he sounds lucky to get a flight at all.
