3. There is still time
If I recall correctly Festivus, and the airing of grievances is celebrated on Dec. 23.

Btw, you forgot Ann Coulter, who would easily win the 'Feats of Strength.' :)

7. Yeah, and for holding like half an ounce of reefer
There's no practical difference between that and throwing your ass in the slammer for having a 12-pack of Bud in the fridge.

We've got to change these fucking outdated laws.

11. End poverty and drug use will dip down to nothing...but they don't want that
Big money in drugs among the poor. And then we pay for the pleasure of locking people up as enforced and hardly effective "treatment".

9. Yes!
Succinctly put! Just don't mind if I elaborate--albeit in a superficial way.

I think you are spot on. Not only are they draconian, they are evil and hypocritical. Hundreds of thousands of lives, probably more in the millions, have been ruined as a result and zillions of dollars have been made by those many who support and carry out the draconian laws to which you refer.

Before someone climbs all over me, I'm not suggesting for a minute that drugs should be made easily available to youngsters. What I am saying is that much can be done on any number of fronts to ease the demand and decriminalize the user. Current laws are punitive beyond measure and steeped in political and bureaucratic skullduggery. The War on Drugs is a farce that the majority have bought into without thinking it through.

One day when I'm up to it and have the time to dig up a heap of evidence including figures, I just might take this on as a cause (this one just might be worth the effort). But, I'm sure there are scores of others on this board including you who might like to preempt me. I'm becoming embarrassingly lazy of late.

10. It's the rare politician
Edited on Thu Dec-21-06 08:21 PM by Oeditpus Rex
who'd come out for decriminalization of marijuana, even if they believe in it, because they're afraid it would cost them votes and possibly their political careers.

What's needed is a mass, non-partisan education campaign about the real effects of drugs, positive and negative (none of this DARE bullshit) as well as about the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 and the subsequent outlandish reasons marijuana was criminalized (basically, it was an anti-immigration deal). If more people saw the laws for the jokes that they are, some things might — might — get changed.
