1. I am boycotting that movie
Jerry Falwell said it will turn me and my husband gay and I don't want a divorce. :)

9. Are you serious?
Jerry Falwell is on crack. There is no gayness in that movie! What an idiot!

10. Michael Medved said it too
He sez the film contains "a whole subtext, as there so often is, about homosexuality."

Maybe they're right. I was looking in my closet today, thinking about how crappy everything looks. I need to go shopping! :eyes:

15. I saw the movie, too
where is there a gay subtext? I mean, if you want to criticize the movie for being preachy about the environment, I can see that... but, I can't recall any sort of gay subtext?

17. It's because Mumbles says. . .
"Can't you accept me for what I am?" (or whatever). That's the dangerous homosexual agenda at work! :silly:

16. Here's a gay subtext for you-
1:26I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan:
Very pleasant hast thou been unto me:
Thy love to me was wonderful,
Passing the love of women.

(II Samuel 1:26)

4. Yeah, Che is kinda a dead giveaway eh?
:D

But seriously, Happy Feet was fantastic-- it was obviously easily enjoyed by the kids (I mean, come ON-- if you don't think those penguins were cuyte, you have a heart of stone) but the details of the plot were very very very dark and suprisingly deep.

All those claims of racism, fwiw, were probably the dumbest claims I've ever heard. I mean, come on.

7. there were some claims that the movie was racist--both the left and the right claimed this
The different species of penguins-- Emperor, Macaroni, and Blue (I think)-- were different cultures. The Emperors were jazz and rhythm and blue, and the parents of Mumble were modeled after Elvis and, I think, an Arthea Franklin character. The little Blue penguins were hispanic/latino, and the Macaroni penguin seemed to be modeled after a southern preacher type character.
None of these characterizations were negatively portrayed nor judgmental, it was just a way to creatively model the penguin world.

The right claimed, as they usually do, that the movie was a preachy environmental movie. :eyes:

8. I read the environmental thing ...
Edited on Sat Dec-23-06 08:01 PM by RoyGBiv
...as though that's a bad thing, but I guess I just tuned everything else out after seeing it myself. I guess I can see where someone might find racism if they were looking to be offended, or probably more precisely hell bent on finding something about which to be offended no matter what the actual evidence. I just hadn't seen it.

I agree, though. That's ... well, I'll put it nicely and just say that it's weird.

Good movie, imo.

11. But it's advancing the hippie, homosexual, environmentalist whackjob agenda!
It'll turn your kids gay and spread more propaganda about global warming! Fox News told me so!

:sarcasm:

19. It was campy, and if you can't suspend the adult in you...
...then I can see that many people would hate it. Why did you not like it? The musical elements?

It's one of those movies that if you can't mute that adult part of you, you will hate it. One of my friends was like that.
