Any satellite/Dish network tech experts around heah?
Sorry to do this in GD but we don't seem to have a DU forum for this kind of problem!

We have a Dish 522 system (dual tuner w/ DVR). Worked 99.9% perfectly for over 2 years. A couple weeks ago, the audio on Tuner 2 began to go goofy - it would start breaking up, sounding like a loose microphone wire then after about a minute go dead. I connected the RF cable to 3 different TV sets with the same result and tried a new RG6 jumper too (from the Sat receiver to the TV, it modulates to channel 60 in this setup), no difference.

I could just hit the 'reverse' button for a second -or longer- then the 'live TV' button and the audio comes back on immediately...maybe for half an hour, maybe for several hours then does its little screwup again. The video is absolutely not affected. Note this does not involving physically touching any part of the hardware/system.

A call to Dish tech support seemed to confirm our suspicion about a bad receiver so they sent us a new one. We hooked it up this morning and it does the exact same thing! So we think well hell, maybe SOMEHOW it's the LNB and we changed it out (my roommate is a Dish installer and has all this kind of stuff lying around) - no change. So we cut off all the coax ends and put new high quality F connectors on every connection in the system...STILL does it!

So called Dish Tech again this evening, all they can think of is a bad receiver...but TWO with the EXACT SAME symptoms? I guess that's not impossible but what are the chances?

Lemme see, what else? Oh, we also tried using the A/V outputs from Tuner 2 on a separate TV, same result so that seems to eliminate the RF modulator...we think.

So what's left? This is driving us batshit nuts! Anybody have a suggestion that doesn't involve sledge hammers? ;-)

2. As a friend says when he works on something he likes to start with the biggest hammer he can find
then work his way down. You're on your own, sorry

3. I love a good Dish problem! I had one and solved it by Googling!
Apparently you are not alone with the audio problems.

See this link: http://groups.google.com/group/alt.dbs.echostar/browse_thread/thread/d69e58329822792b/8c4d7d9903ae96a5%238c4d7d9903ae96a5
and this one: http://www.satelliteguys.us/archive/index.php/t-45478.html

Actually, I found the solution to mine a couple of years ago on Amazon!

Good luck. I've had Dish for about 4 years now and love it.

4. Rupert Murdoch is jamming you.
He wants you to switch over to DirecTV.

Seriously I have no idea. I've had Dish for 10 years, and have never had a problem like you're describing. I'd request a whole new system. They'll do it.

5. Could be two bad receivers
My mother bought a new refrig. It kept running and freezing and wouldn't stop. She had to send it back picked out a new one same kind and it wouldn't freeze. The store could not believe that she had two brand new freezers and that each didn't work. The next one she picked out a different kind...it work perfect. So strange things happen.

7. If those two refrigerators were produced on the same day and
about the same time it could had been some part that was faulty. Or if they had an assembler that was not the regular assembler. Maybe, regular had a potty break or something.

6. just to be clear, you have tried different cables out right?
have you also changed out the cable into the aux room??

it really sounds like a cable issue to us

10. Yes I made up a brand new short cable and ran it directly from the rcvr output
to a completely different TV. Same result. I guess the only thing left to do is change the coax from
the LNB to the receiver but we can't figure out how a cable problem there would only affect 1 of the tuners!

8. Card?
Dish and Direct throw so many hashes out they will sometimes hit their own cards.

9. Dish doesn't use smart cards any more. I guess it could be a software glitch
though but one would think they'd know about it unless we're the only ones affected...

11. Actually, the chances of two bad receivers is very large...
Edited on Wed Dec-27-06 11:35 AM by Prag
Since they are mechanically assembled an assembly error can happen every time.

Could be as simple as a cold solder joint somewhere.

The reason the rewind and play works is (I assume) due to the fact there's
probably some checksum done on the data in the recording phase which
eliminates bad data packets and keeps the good ones. I doubt checksums are
run in the "live tv" mode.

I used to have a Volkswagen and I went through about 6 alternators before I
found one which worked. Turns out the 7th one was from a different LOT of
rebuilds. All of the previous Alts my auto parts store had were from the
same LOT.

Took me FOREVER to figure that one out.

Any recent temperature changes can bring out a problem.

Try a different model of receiver on the same wiring and dish horn if you can.
If that eliminates the problem it's something in the receiver. If it doesn't it
could be in the dish horn.

12. I wondered about that too but the 2 receivers were made almost 2 years apart
and seem to have vastly different serial and run numbers. Oddly, though, last night it pulled its trick about 10 p.m. so I just shut off the TV but didn't access the dish receiver at all. This morning I turned the TV back on and the audio was back...and unlike every other morning after it gets updates during the wee hours, didn't ask to have the 'select' button pressed to 'wake it up', and so far today it hasn't messed up at all! :eyes:
MAYBE (I'm hoping) it was some goofy software issue...??? Still keeping the hammer option on the table though :D
