Ladies of a certain age: Do you remember the 1st time you heard "I Will Survive"?
Edited on Thu Dec-28-06 12:01 AM by BleedingHeartPatriot
I do, because I moved from Hawaii to Missouri for a hot, charming guy.

It just so happened this song was released about 2 months after the move. I first heard it driving to work at the worst job I ever worked.

I moved back to Hawaii after about six months. (he was hot and loved Monty Python, OK! )

I :loveya: this song! MKJ

edited because the OP title was sloppy, and whatever. I loooove you guys! :hi:

2. I remember it, but I never thought the song was meant...
for me. Donna was singing it for my Gay male friends (I lived in S.F. at the time). I could share their joy in disco, but I was more of a funk/punk lover myself.

It's funny how evocative a song can be of a certain place and time. :hi:

5. You mean GLORIA was singing it dear.
Gloria Gaynor. It's obvious you were a funk/punk lover!

I was 12 when it came out. Didn't relate much until later.

3. Right after I broke up with the love of my life...or so I thought at the time.
As it turns out, I survived.

4. Not the original...
But I do remember the first time I heard Cake's cover of it. I was eating Capn' Crunch and watching tv in the basment.

7. Eighth grade, I believe
Check it out--Catholic school, very few kids per grade. I was a transfer from a public school system that went into the shitter, but the other kids all grew up together. The school was attached to a church, so we had no cafeteria and no gym--phys ed was the occasional dance class--and I mean square dancing--taught by our regular teachers. Some of the "cool girls" asked if they could teach some disco classes. And there we were, in our plaid skirts, boys in blue turtlenecks and navy pants, getting down to "I Will Survive" and other thwocka thwocka thwocka hits of the late '70s in the basement rec room under the church. Studio 54 it sure WASN'T.

Gads I had a surreal childhood.

9. Great story.
I'm sure my first hearing of it was in a gay bar in the Phx AZ metro area. All those hot guys. DANCING. Fun times.

And I learned The Hustle in my PE class.

11. Gah! Catholic school!
And the amazing part is, we survived! But I don't think that's what Gloria had in mind...

13. Too busy with kids. What I DO remember is my daughter's friend
who had the song played at her wedding, not reception, wedding!

I wondered about the future of that relationship but evidently it survived, too, because they have 3 kids and are still together. The oldest just had his Bar Mitzvah last year!

15. Yeah I remember when I heard it:
I was in jr. high......I went to the skating rink with my friend, I was dating her brother (or so I thought), who was older and could drive......he was supposed to meet me at the rink, but he didn't show up, he was with another girl at a football game...
