2. depends on the violence
Edited on Sun Dec-31-06 03:16 AM by Wetzelbill
I am an athlete, well, former athlete, so I love sports and competition. I do not like, say, somebody shooting another person or anything like that. But fighting as a sport isn't actually violent, not anymore so than football is, it certainly has far fewer serious injuries. I'd rather have a child watch an MMA fight than something like American Idol, that is for sure. I'd rather have a child train in MMA and learn discipline than play video games or even own a cell phone.

3. Yes -- I guess it depends on the violence
I'm a former athlete, as well -- football, baseball, basketball . . . played them all in my formative years, high school and some beyond. I like a well-refereed boxing match from time-to-time, as well. But the MMA fighting, in my opinion, is all about bloodlust. All that's missing are a couple of lions and a Roman.

I understand why people like it, just like I understand why people like violent movies, video games, songs, etc. Just not my cup of tea.

4. It's actually much safer than boxing
The referees tend to stop the match fairly quickly if a fighter gets badly rocked or isn't intelligently defending himself. In boxing, a fighter can get knocked down and is urged to get back up to continue the fight. Another safety advantage of MMA is that bouts can also end in submissions, which is no more dangerous than getting "tapped" in a BJJ class. In the event that a fighter is in a choke and appears to be fading, the referee will jump in and stop the fight.

5. right, boxing is much worse
I love boxing too, but it is way more damaging. Largely due to what you describe. Basically you're seing a half hour of repetitive head trauma for people, it adds up over time.
