Blink 182: Another Girl, Another Planet cover
A tidy, energetic cover of one of the great songs of the New Wave era. Hadn't seen it before. Had to share:

1. The Only Ones were one of the great unsung bands of the late 70's
"Even Serpents Shine" is an absolute classic:

And Peter Perrett was one of the era's great frontmen..

3. He was, or is, some kind of minor genius
Shame he didn't attain the kind of stardom many lesser artists of the era got. He deserved it.

9. Yes! Yes! Yes!
Perrett was brilliant.
He was also quite a sartorial and tonsorial influence on the younger mitchum

4. I know what ya mean
But when I heard this done in a recent cover, it brought back a little of the adrenaline surge that the original did. Now I have to lie down for awhile...

10. Good point. The Replacements' version is pretty faithful to the original
but the tempo is kinda leaden and the guitar leads aren't very creative (suffering big compared to the great guitar work in the original). Blink just sorta ironed out some of the quirks of the original and turned it into a punkier but poppier tune. Still took me back to a better era for a few minutes.

11. Blink version is pretty respectable
cause it doesn't emulate the original arrangement, but keeps it brisk and exploits the punky edge of the original. It's not a landmark cover, but it raised my jaded pulse a little.

Nothing will ever compare to hearing the original recorded version the first time, then getting to see the Only Ones on the club tour they did to support the album. John Perry spent almost the whole show with his back turned to the audience, reeling off amazing leads all night. Perrett was the consummate Edwardian dandy-punk. It was transformative.
