1. Found a parallel universe and got trapped there.
That explains why you have 50 years of experience, but are only 35 years old. :D

16. Tell me about. It really sucks when you WERE a consultant.
Since they weren't employers the clients were loathe to provide job references. I learned that I could offer to provide Schedule C info to prove that I was really working during the interval, but that had some disadvantages too when it came to salary negotiations.

31. was that information you provided yourself?
did they corroborate the schedule C with any official source?

seems kinda easy to wiggle around that, because they couldn't get that confidential tax info from the govt without the candidate's consent.

35. I'm the only one who could provide it, and no one asked. I volunteered.
Edited on Wed Jun-06-07 01:39 PM by Gormy Cuss
The funny thing is that when I did so the interviewer said it wouldn't be necessary.

on edit: I did this for a job where I had the qualifications and experience from a previous employment and consulting was a natural extension of that work. They chose to hire me based on that.

5. Depends on the position -Sabbatical?
if it is a professional position you can say you were on a sabbatical working on your writing or research that didn't pan out (work on that last part)

if not-just tell them that you went off on a journey and now you have decided that your life's journey has brought you to Kinko's (insert any store name) :-)

30. you know what's funny, the lower on the employment totem pole you go, the less forgiving
they seem to get.

try to get any kind of job nowadays for any national chain. the standards are excruciatingly high, you better not have one blemish on your Choicepoint background check (which is i think now is the industry standard for background checks). last time i tried, circuit city required signing a consent form for them to pull a social security transcript. any variance between that and your application would be cause for them to withdraw consideration of employment.

small business employment is different, that's where i'm concentrating now, that and temp agencies, but agencies are getting really wacky.

i still don't get the connection between compliance, fitting the "correct" profile, red flags and contingent employment as a TEMPORARY worker.

i've resigned myself to this situation and no longer get upset about it.

I don't think employers would ask for all of that, but any one of them would prove self-employment if proof is necessary.

There are probably other options that I haven't thought about.

I'm a disabled attorney. I can't imagine going back to work in my shape, it would have to be the opportunity of a lifetime, plus lots of pain drugs. However, if I were to try and go back...I'd say that my clients and work in the previous years are confidential, which would generally work, UNLESS, you're interviewing with a firm that's looking for a rainmaker.
