Who is your favorite Star Trek(tm) character?
Edited on Sun Aug-03-03 09:53 AM by thermodynamic
For me it's an easy one: Dr. McCoy.

(yes, you can include TNG, DS9, Voy, Ent, or any other spinoff that Ricky Berman will pull out of his ass in order to exploit the series beyond the grave; and yes it's been dead for years.)

Additional: I dig Scotty and LaForge as well, though I prefer LaForge when he isn't wallowing in technobabble...

17. The Borg
Much like any monster, it's best to give them a sense of threat and to keep them in action as little as possible. Giving them more character than what is needed turns them into a joke. And, whew boy, Trek did that sure enough.

"Q-Who" did that most admirably despite the incident where they had shown the infant wrapped up in Borg plastic tubing (tm). For a monster introduction story, this one rocks. It also pointed out the scene from "The Neutral Zone", which was the initial setup for the Borg.

Then there's "The Best of Both Worlds". It works once, but only once, Number One. After that, subsequent re-watchings become more and more pointless. When BOBW originally aired, it was obvious (to me anyway) that halfway through that Picard becoming Borgified would be the cliffhanger. And what made for a fairly cool cliffhanger (obviousness aside) was let down BIG-TIME because Data helped Picard find himself. Oh, the Borg are pretty namby-pamby if they can be made to shut down and self-destruct so quickly. :eyes:

"I, Borg" made the big mistake of humanizing the Borg and I couldn't see how Guinan or Picard could change their tune after dealing with one little irrelevancy.

Then comes "Descent" - which was proof the series had descended into cheaply written trash using pathetic shock'n'gore tactics to scare the audience, how puerile. The only good bit was Lore telling the Feds that their intervention caused the Collective to break down. Even Hugh was pissed at Picard and rightly so!

Did DS9 have any Borg eps, I hope not?

Then there's "First Contact" but it's so stupid I won't even bother apart from saying the Collective now needs a Queen and it's not the same collective as the one Picard decimated which means the Borg are a series of small and separate Collectives and not one gigantic Collective.

Then comes Voyager, which has about 30 or more Borg stories. :eyes: Janeway even gets to thank Q for introducing the Borg. (which is a lie as the Borg were clearly around as early as "The Neutral Zone" when mention was made of strange circumstances that would later be attributed to the Borg: Chunks of land being carved out of planets; chunks of land containing cities.)

Then came the rubbish tip of the series: "Enterprise". Well it turns out that the events of "First Contact" created the situation which allowed the Borg to send a signal which reached the Collective some 300 years later and thus give us what was described in "The Neutral Zone".

Hmmm, let's not forget "Star Trek Generations". Somehow 23rd century Feds knew of the El Aurians and the fact there were refugee ships. So close to Earth at the time and the El Aurians never bothered to warn the Feds?

Also, there's no continuity between Borg episodes. In one episode, it's one big collective. The next episode implies there are several little collectives (which is why not all the Borg after "Descent" are individuals justly out for revenge after Picard destroyed their way of life yet allowing them to live on and which is also why we have no less than three Borg queens... :eyes: For trying to create a sense of continuity, Berman and company are equally ready to discard it whenever it becomes an inconvenience to them.)

TNG et al clutched on to the Borg as if they had nothing else to offer. Big mistake.

And I was hoping for a "Q-Olympics" movie with Robin Williams as being a Q along with John DeLancie. Oh yeah, "Voyager" screwed up the Q continuum as well. :eyes: Thank you Rick Berman, you twit...

28. Beautifully said on all counts
Berman has screwed up everything, and "Descent" was, for my money, the biggest POS in the ST:TNG series canon. of course, "First Contact" and "Nemesis" hold equal weight at the bottom of the shit pile in terms of ST:TNG movies, and movies in general.

Screw berman.

And 7 of 9, though quite a lot to look at, had absolutely no reasno to be on the show. That was pure pandering to the fan-base on that one, to entice to watch that drek of a show. stupid character, unnecessary, and, well, just plain stupid.

11. You'd like the song...
..."Security Strike Blues" by Cecilia Eng. It's found on the record "Star Trek Border Patrol". A nice bluesy sound

o/" Inside our cabins, listening at the wall,
We can hear the Captain's security call.
Command wears gold, Security red,
And we've all noticed who winds up dead.

13. Wesley Crusher....
....the environment one lives in.... is always more interesting to me ...when seen through the eyes of a child growing into adulthood.

...Wesley was always encouraged to express his independent thoughts and actions within a very structured reality...it was no surprise that in the end... he chose to take the 'next step beyond' into a path unknown.

19. Wesley was best portrayed in season 3
In season 1 he made fools of the Engineering staff so often that I had to kick myself as a reminder that this is supposed to be Starfleet's flagship... he was toned down in season 2, but in season 3 he had more of a point that was NOT related to being a know-all Wonderboy...

As for Wil Wheaton as a person, he rules. I dunno if his acting made a difference in Wesley, but it was the writing of Wesley I couldn't stand for the most part.

16. Tough choice, but I go with Spock
Dr. McCoy close second.

Also loved Pulaski and Wesley.

And of course Kirk and Picard.

Though in the whole series, Spock is the one who seemed to have the most extensive growth and changes in personality, outlook, philosophy, etc., and coming to terms with his Vulcan and Human heritage, and in that regard I find him fascinating, and put him at the top of the list of fave characters.

Picard also had lots of growth and changes - torture by the Cardassians, the episode he ends up living an entire life, falling in love with the astronomy woman, and the final episode with him through time.

great stuff.

27. Most and Least Favorite
Edited on Sun Aug-03-03 03:45 PM by oldcoot
Most Favorite: Major/Colonel Kira (DS9)- She was a complicated character. I liked the fact that she had been a freedom fighter who was trying to adjust to life after the occupation of her planet.

Least Favorite: Captain Archer -I find Captain Archer very annoying. I did not like his attitude toward T'Pol during the first season. However, I thought the writers were improving his character until the episode with the dog. I could not believe he took his dog on a diplomatic mission and then spent the entire episode being angry about his dog getting hurt. I was really hoping that T'Pol would shoot him for the sake of the universe.

Edited: I misread the original post.

I cried when he died, and during Spock's eulogy. TNG, Data and Riker are tied for me. DS9, Dax and Sisko. Voyager, 7of9, and Icheb (wish he were around longer to develop further). Enterprise, I hate them all! Travis is to much of a whimp, Reed is too paranoid, Trip is just stupid, Hoshi is too whiny, Phlox is too upbeat, T'pol isn't Vulcan enough, Archer should just take a Quantum Leap. Who have I missed? Oh, the dog! I like the dog.

Kirk was great. So was the entire first show crew -- Scotty and Spock especially.

Data was cool. Kira and Garak made DS9 strong.

But since I haven't seen him mentioned yet, I'll give a vote for Worf. He gave strength to NextGen and help resusitate DS9. Dorn deserves serious credit for his portrayal.
