Sopranos: What do YOU think happened?
I'm thinking even rival families wouldn't whack Tony in front of his wife and kids. Then again, ol' Phil got it in front of his daughter and grandchildren, so maybe all bets are off.

C'mon! Let's hear your best speculation!

2. As I said in another thread
The license plate outside the restaurant--wasn't it the same as the one on the car Phil Leotardo was in when he was killed?

17. I re-watched this and the only plates I saw at restaurant were Meadow's.
But, I was admittedly distracted by som many things... like - Tony SAW HIMSELF sitting at a booth in the reataurant when he initially walked in. And, there's scuttle that he was wearing a different shirt when he walked in than when he was sitting in the booth.

A lot to take in and ponder, for sure. I hated the ending at first, but love it now.

4. I don't have the luxury of seeing tonight's ep as it airs
but my prediction is that he has a final sit-down with the FBI agent he's been cozying up with, after telling his family to expect big changes, and for him to go away for a long time before coming back to them in their new lives.

Just a hunch, not clicking on replies to this so don't bother.

5. Ford Prefect walked into the bar and told them that the world was about to end...
...and forced them to eat some peanuts and drink beer to help recover from the shock of hitchiking on Vogon ship.

6. I think
the writers had NO IDEA how to end this
So they decided to go artsy fartsy....
"We will let the audience decide in their own minds how it ended"
because we don't have a clue.....

7. Tony was whacked in front of his family.

The kids went on to live productive lives and Carmella linked back up with that cute guy who fled to Italy.

The cat won a starring role as Grizabella in the return of "Cats" on Broadway.

11. I thought so originally. After another viewing, I think life is just going on...
He was just looking at Meadow coming into the restaurant.

Everythign was too obvious for him to get whacked. The Furio lookalike at the counter. The two shady men coming in. The Meadow parking problems.

I think Chase implies life goes on for the Sopranos, just without us.

16. I agree. Here's how i just saw it explained on another site.
Not my words --

“You probably don’t even hear it when it happens.” Bobby’s comment to Tony Soprano on the lake, which Tony recalls as he lay on the mattress in the safehouse with an AR-15 assault rifle on his chest, tells us exactly what happened at Holsten’s. We don’t see or hear what happens to Tony because Tony doesn’t see or hear it happen, either.

Which makes perfect sense: the whole saga was about him, about life from his perspective. His desires, his fears. His dreams, his flashbacks, his thoughts. So why would we get to see his lifeless body on the table in a pool of blood? Why would we get to see his brain-matter-spattered family screaming in horror, the way we saw Mrs. Leotardo scream? Why would we even want to see that?

No, all we see is Tony, this murderer whose ordinariness fascinates us as it repels us, with his family in their last moments together, as he passes a large basket of (what else) fried food, listening to an anthem of his youth: “Payin’ anything to roll the dice/Just one more time/Some will win/Some will lose . . . Don’t stop . . .”

And then it stops. Cut to black. Only he didn’t get to see the credits. There was complete closure. It could not have been a more fitting ending. . . .

22. nope.
life goes on.

there was no reason for tony to get whacked- they had reached a settlement with new york, and phil getting capped was part of the bargain.

the guy who went into the bathroom was just a guy going into the bathroom.

9. I think life goes on for them.
If that guy who whacked Bobby is there who's to say that someone didn't recognize him and take him out before he could get to Tony? Tony could clean up any loose ends just as easily as Phil could have.

12. I think the ending just screwed the new show that followed it
Edited on Mon Jun-11-07 03:02 AM by rainbow4321
Cuz half the Soprano viewers were too busy on the phone w/ their cable company wanting to know why the hell the cable went out, making them miss the final scene..and the other half were online (me included) at various websites going "what the hell just happened to my TV?". We all crashed the NJ.com website server (site has a Soprano forum) right as the credits were rolling...first it wouldn't load at all and then it was sooooo slow. The website header when I finally got thru to the site "Fans in the forum are NOT happy"
That leaves maybe 2 people sticking around in front of the TV left to watch John from Cincinnati! Hey, HBO, you can thank Chase for the crappy premiere ratings!!

13. As Bobby said to Tony once...
"... (when it happens) You never hear it coming."

Just as the show reached the (seeming) climax, we (the audience) had our screen go black. If you were like me, you sat there stunned, and hoping that the cable company screwed up or something. But, no. I and the rest of the audience got whacked. We never heard it coming. Chase wanted to leave us with how that feels.

Tony and his family? -- Life will go on as usual. He's heading toward his RICO trial, Carmella is buying another property to re-hab, Meadow is going to be a very well-paid lawyer after she marries a mobster's son, and AJ is not going to fight terrorists, but become a production assistant at Carmine's film company. Life will go on for them.

btw, the cat, I think is Pussy reincarnated. (Pussy = cat). Also, Tony scolds Paulie when Paulie wants to get rid of the cat for spooking him out... "He catches rats here at the Bing and all you wanna do is drown him." We all remember that Pussy flipped, and when Tony found out, what happened to him out at sea. I think the cat was staring at the photo of Chris trying to let the other guys know that Tony killed him, but they're all too dense to get it. To them a cat is a cat is a cat.

20. I don't know...
I think life just goes on... but can anyone tell me what the meaning of Meadow's prolonged problem parallel parking could be a metaphor for? Personally, I think they overdid it manipulating the audience at the end. The 2 guys who were suspicious ended up doing nothing and in the end it sort of became a 'choose your own adventure' type ending. There's no denying it was a dud ending. I don't usually think it's essential for endings to be so concrete, but this one was given suspense just for the sake of it with no real reason. Wouldn't Tony be more wary of the guy in the gray jacket, who was so obviously staring at them? Another thing, who shot Phil? Was it the same guy who shot Syl?

27. After a second viewing, and sleeping on it, this is what I think

"...it goes on and on and on and on...."

The paranoia. The constant fear, just waiting for the other shoe to drop. Remember the first episode of season 6, when Carmela is dreaming that she's in her spec house with Adrianna and telling her, "I'm worried, Ade". "Everybody's worried" Adrianna says, shrugging. Carmela says, "no, I'm worried ALL THE TIME". That is what their lives are like. Tony and Carmela are constantly just waiting for something terrible to happen. And a lot of terrible things have happened... yet, for now, life goes on.

We felt that fear. My heart was pounding away those last moments. That's what Chase wanted us to feel - he wanted us to feel how they feel... and will always feel. Tony's RICO trial is gaining steam - it's coming. They know this. But they have to keep going... "don't stop believing".

Chase loves to tell his stories with music. This has been discussed in depth over the years. HBO even ran a special recently about the Music of the Sopranos. Remember right before Chrissy died, Comfortably Numb was playing, and there was this long moment of silence right before the accident. Listen to the lyrics during that moment. Tony glances at Chris as the lyrics say, "the child is grown, the dream is gone". Well, that's how Tony felt. The dream of Christopher was over. He was supposed to be the one. But it didn't work out that way. Brilliant. Chase does it again with the final scene. Right after Tony tells Carmela about his pending arrest, the lyrics say, "it goes on and on and on and on". Life in constant turmoil and fear.

I really don't think the guy that goes to the bathroom is there to hit Tony. Who called the hit? Phil is dead, and NY sanctioned it. Notice too that several people there got those suspicious looks... like the guy in the corner with the hat. Was it the FBI? Like the black dudes that walk in. Are they there to rob the place? It's the constant paranoia we are supposed to pick up on. The audience is whacked at the end, not Tony or his family. Us. The screen suddenly goes black because that's it for us. We didn't even see it coming, just like Bobby said.

eta: Don't Stop Believin' lyrics by Journey

Just a small town girl, livin in a lonely world
She took the midnight train goin anywhere
Just a city boy, born and raised in south detroit
He took the midnight train goin anywhere

A singer in a smokey room
A smell of wine and cheap perfume
For a smile they can share the night
It goes on and on and on and on

Strangers waiting, up and down the boulevard
Their shadows searching in the night
Streetlight people, living just to find emotion
Hiding, somewhere in the night

Working hard to get my fill,
Everybody wants a thrill
Payin anything to roll the dice,
Just one more time
Some will win, some will lose
Some were born to sing the blues
Oh, the movie never ends
It goes on and on and on and on

(chorus)

Dont stop believin
Hold on to the feelin
Streetlight people
