My daughter is marrying a fellow who is allergic to cats and dogs.
How long before she has him on allergy pills and a cat or dog in the apartment?

4. if she loves him never, but if she is just using him, all bets are off

if you have an animal dander allergy and continue to live with cats and dogs, the progression is asthma and then heart disease and then you die

if you love someone you don't do that to them

unfortunately my brother doesn't love himself and is doing it to himself even as we speak, because he won't give up the cats, he already has not only asthma but advanced cardiovascular disease -- he's younger than me and looks older even though he's a slim nonsmoker with the same parents

sigh

if you love someone you don't make them live w. their allergen, it's a pretty basic test, the pills only work to protect you from occasional exposure, not from lifelong constant exposure

sorry to be a downer, i see from the other responses that people think it's a joke, but it is not a joke, you have a choice, your loved one or the cat, and if you decide to put your loved one on pills so that you can keep exposing him to his allergen then you don't really love him, not really
in any meaningful sense of the word, you may have soft romantic feelings for him but you don't mind much that he's going to die much younger than normal because of the asthma/heart disease you've wished on him

5. Depends
If he is really devoted and in love, it could be weeks. If he's been single for a long period of time, it might never happen.

6. I wholeheartedly agree with pitohui here - unless your daughter's a selfish bitch, never.
She needs to choose her hubby or a pet, she can't have both. His life will be a living hell if she forces him into living with a pet to which he's allergic.

If a woman told me that I had to take more drugs so that I could tolerate an animal (I, too, have severe allergies to anything with fur), I'd tell her to go fuck herself and pack her shit, cuz she's leaving.

16. I agree
I've had severe allergies and asthma since I was 3. I've built up a very small tolerance to my own cats but will not replace them when they go. I cannot have a dog in the house. Period. My asthma has become life-threatening over the last 10 years and I would grow to hate the person who wanted to put my health at risk for a pet and have me doped up on antihistamines. I'd pack and leave.

8. Ideally, never...
People who don't suffer from allergies have no idea how miserable it is and how serious it can be. She wouldn't like it if the shoe were on the other foot.

10. I'm in an awkward position , allergy and asthma-wise.
I took my son to the doctor when he was about 18 months because he had a nasty cough. I hated to waste the doctor's time because I knew it was just a cough, but there were no OTC cough suppressants for kids that young and the little guy was really coughing. He was swept from my arms and injected with epinephrine. It turns out that what I thought was a cough was actually full blown asthma. How would I have known? My brothers used to cough like that all winter every winter and Id had episodes of it myself!

So asthma and allergies are the norm in my household and twice daily nebulizer treatments went on for years. Everyone in my house has allergies and asthma to some degree. I don't think we understand what it would be like not to have allergies. We also live in a very old (120years+) house with lots of dust (I mean, 5 foot of snow on the ground in winter and I have dust?!? Where does it come from?). There are 60 acres of pine trees behind us not to mention cottonwoods, oaks, maples, etc, so the pollen load is fierce. Given all that, having a couple cats and dogs around hardly counts. Sorry if I offended people by not taking allergies to animal dander seriously.

12. I've been there
Had the dust thing, the old house thing, grew up with dogs all my life. Then I even worked in a dog kennel before acquiring a dog and cat allergy. Now that I have the allergy, though, it can be really nasty and miserable. I'm in a newly renovated apartment - first tenants so no previous pets here - and I am so much happier. I love animals and always had a pet until recently but my life is better without one - it makes a difference when you can breathe!

My poor husband loves cats and I wish we could have one, for his sake, but it's not possible. He's been a good sport about it and is sure to get his fill of cats when we visit friends who have them as pets. Just last weekend he even stopped to pet a cat that was laying on the sidewalk outside - he's such a sucker for a kitty. Good thing he loves me more than his desire for a cat!

11. A life without my animal companions is no life at all.
So, I'd have to say, I wouldn't marry if I couldn't have my critters.

If I suddenly developed an allergy tomorrow, I don't care if it would shorten my life, I'm keeping the furbabies.

I've met a Sphinx, and he had an absolutely lovable personality. I understand they're like that.
