Woohoo! Jeff Weaver just threw a 4-hit shut-out for the Mariners against
the Pirates!!!!! I think I'm even more pleased for him than I am for the team. This broke a 6-game losing streak, but more importantly, it was Jeff's best game this year. He had a very rough start, then it was discovered he had a problem with his back. Was on the DL for awhile, had an okay start last week in his return, but he was incredible tonight!

Way to go, Jeff!! :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

2. About time too! (although, frankly, it's gonna take a few more like tonight..
..before I'm able to look at the schedule without grimacing when I see his name)

4. I know. MrSG had to work tonight, so he missed it. When I told him
how well Weaver had done, he said he thought for sure we would lose the game when he looked at the schedule and saw it was Weaver pitching.

I agree; he will need a few more really good outings before people stop cringing when they see his name on the schedule, but I think he went a long way toward redeeming himself tonight. And, as I said in my OP, his last outing wasn't bad at all. He was only allowed to go through the 6th inning because it was his first game back after being on the DL.

Hopefully, that game, and this one tonight, are signs of something good for him.

7. Yep yep.. hopefully this is a new beginning for him.. and..
I'm hoping Felix starts pitching like he did before his injury... and, that Beltre and Sexon start actually living up to their contracts. (As an aside, what the hell is it with 3rd base for the Ms? They've had 3 fairly well-proven hitters in that position completely forget how to hit a damned ball over the last 6 years... boggles the mind)

8. 3rd base hasn't been as much of a strange position for the M's as
left field has been. Thank goodness we have Rauuuuuuuuuuuul back. He's been doing really well in LF, AND swinging a pretty mean bat.

Sexy has been heating up; he hit homers last night and tonight, and they were long homers!

As to Felix, yeah, I hope like hell he gets his groove back. I was so impressed with him his first few games of the season. He had really gotten it together, but he just has not been consistent since he came back off the DL. I hope he gets better again soon. We need him.

Now, if only someone would turn a hose on the damned Angels!!! :grr:

5. The guy sure needed it.
I didn't get to see it so I don't know how fluky it was.

What was his velocity like? From the box score it looked like he was missing a few bats.

His next start is against the Red Sox. If he repeats this performance, I'll eat everyone's hat.

6. Well, he was on the DL for awhile. They figured out that the reason
he had had such a bad start this year (hideous, actually), was because of a problem with his back. He went on the DL for a few weeks, then threw some simulated games. His first game back, last week, he was much better than he had been, though still a little rusty. He went 6 innings (he was on a pitch count). Tonight, he was phenomenal!

I don't know if this was a fluke or not. I sure hope not. He was completely comfortable on the mound, didn't seem rattled at the 4 hits the Pirates did get, and was just totally focused, but loose. It was a wonderful game to watch.

But yeah, we'll have to see how he does when the Red Sox get here.

9. I thought he was pretty bad in his last start actually.
Not much improvement, just luckier results on balls put in play. 10 hits in 6 innings and he was topping out at 87-88.

Tonight looks like an entirely different case. That's why I'm curious about the velocity. If he can get to the low 90's with his heat, he may be able to turn it around. He just doesn't have good enough command of his breaking stuff to get away with a subpar fastball. Although tonight he was dropping sliders in at will.

Very curious to see his next start.
