I miss grouping together songs in a careful, crafted way, making sure each song fits just so in the mix. I miss getting mixed tapes and giving them.
I'm sorry but 'You want to download my entire mp3 collection?' sucks in comparison. No I don't want your entire mp3 collection. I want an actual physical object with around 60 minutes of songs chosen with care because you think I might not have heard them and might like them. I want home made cover art.
My friends and I also do it through zip files and M3U playlists if we're far away don't have the chance to mail out a CD. (To me, it's not so much about the medium as it is the care put into track selection and arrangement.)
I used to spend hours very carefully arranging and re-arranging music. When I was a teenager, there was no direct way to do it - I used a record player and one of those bulky cassette recorders with the actual microphone attached to it.
I had to position the microphone near the speakers just right to catch the sound properly and lift and drop the needle on the records at the precise point in the song, pause the tape to avoid stops and starts - it was great.
I also had to carefully time things to use as much of the tape as I could without cutting off any music. The effort was half the enjoyment of the thing.
High Fidelity, with John Cusack, completely tapped into my brain when it came out. I was freaked out a little. I love that movie. You ever send someone you love a mixed tape and the songs were more accurately expressive than any words you could say or write?
I have mixed playlists on my Sony player. I have the 20gig with all my music but I have a 1g I use for workouts and that has mostly mix playlists on there.
