Racists in the work place..
So.. I don't really want to type out the entire conversation i had with various racist idiots I work with (who just *happen* to be republicans! heh) But essentially, after presenting these fools with plenty of evidence discrediting any notion that racism is based on anything but pure ignorance, they had the nerve to call ME ignorant and inexperienced because I don't generalize and lump people into certain stereotypes, nor do I judge a person based on their race, or anything else for that matter. And now I'm angry!

On a side note.. I work with a bunch of people who don't actually work. Might as well be by myself.

Anyway, yeah, I thought you all might get a kick out of the absurdity of a racist calling another person ignorant.

1. Short and direct answers are best.
I have worked with many asshats and have tried various approaches. In my experience, there is no point in trying to educate or engage them. Half of their joy is racism, but the other half is provocation.

I would just say something short and direct.

"We disagree on this issue and I'm not going to discuss it with you."

"You know, your comments are really distracting me from work."

"I can hear your comments. I don't appreciate them."

2. Too true..
I actually tried to just "agree to disagree" with one of these kids.. apparently they didn't forget our original discussion and decided to bring it up again tonight.

Ironically, the two kids stuck in community college without being able to raise their grades call me stupid for being a liberal.. while I'm leaving their asses behind for school in just a few.. short.. weeks.. :)

3. Pity them. Their punishment is being themselves.
:)

If they ignored the first time, I would say. "I've asked you to not talk about politics with me." And then go about your business.

If you want to taunt them (probably a waste of time), then I'd talk about healthcare and minimum wage and outsourcing.

4. Um...racism IS illegal in the workplace.
How big is your employer?

If one of them engages again, just ask them if they want to be reported to HR. If it's a small place, threaten to report them to an appropriate agency.
