Attention Ancient History Buffs!!
I am going to be teaching a ancient civilization class this fall. While I am fairly schooled in history I don't quite know much about Ancient Civilizations and I am looking for a good thorough book that covers a wide variety. Any suggestions?

2. I will be teaching a 7th grade class...
but I would like an adult level book, so I sound somewhat competent.

3. The Timetables of History is a good quick reference
For Ancient Civilizations, your best bet, IMHO, is the Encyclopedia Britannica.

5. Unfortunately...
I will not be able to bring a set of encyclopedia's with me. I will be teaching in another country and it's quite expensive to ship things like that.

8. Well, I grew up in Mexico
and the first copy I read of the Encyclopedia Britannica was in Spanish, and available in the library.

If your Spanish is good, you may be able to use the local libraries.

But given that you're going to a South American country, you probably want to focus on Ancient American cultures, no?

Or, do you want to do the classic history of western civilization (Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, Rome)?

13. To a class full of 7th graders, "ancient history" means 8-track tapes.
Not a helpful comment, of course, but it had to be said :)

4. I dunno much history...
But there is a good four-book series called "A History of Private Life", which addresses the non-public affairs of people (that stuff that usually doesn't make it into history texts.)

Volume 1 is "From Pagan Rome to Byzantium" and might be a good adjunct reference for addressing the lives of regular ole people in ancient times. (This volume, alas, was lent out to a friend who has gone MIA...I'll have to get another copy somewhere. If I had it I'd also throw you some chapter-headings.)

The set is published by Belknap Harvard

Good luck, and enjoy! :hi:

9. I hate to say it...
But, the Wikipedia is a good starting point. :/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search?search=Ancient+Civilizations&fulltext=Search

It has two added bonuses...

1) It's free.

and

2) There are additional references listed under each subject.

;)

11. I said to "Start" there... But, one should also exercise their "Critical Thinking Skills".
The references are by and large solid tho.
