according to my wife, I have a slightly manic/depressive personality. I tend to pick up new hobbies at least once a year, and when I find one, I get REALLY into it for a while. So I'm always looking for someting interesting to be the next hobby to take over my brain.
About 2 years ago, my wife nudged me towards jewelry making. I guess she figured that if I needed another new hobby to take over my brain, it might as well be something with benefits for her. Then a couple months ago, I found the polymer clay, which gave it another push. And now that friends and family know I make it, they keep me busy with orders.

My best suggestion for beginners is to go to the local library and look for beginner books, especially ones that show all the basic techniques. I think theres even a "jewelry making for dummies". Buy a beading tray to lay out your designs, they're under $5, and a basic tool kit - some needle nose plier, round nose pliers, wire cutter, and needles.

Once you have the basic techniques, and theres really not many, check your local craft store for magazines. I really like one called "Stringing", they will put 100+ designs in every issue, and most of them use the simpler techniques. Lots of ideas on how to arrange beads to inspire you.
After that, you can move on to the more complex stuff, like peyote stich, square stich, making your own beads, etc etc etc.

When I first registered to vote, I was totally un-interested in things political. When it came time to check the "Party" box, my logic was "Dad's a republican- yeah, OK... I'll check that one." And it stayed that way for a long time, as I never really found the time to go change it.

Before I found DU, I mostly read the internet all day. I'd hop in a random forum read posts or read 17 versions of a current news story or watch webcasts/youtube etc.

When I was turned on to DU I flipped. The posts came so fast I couldn't keep up. Then.. omg! The Lounge! People having intelligent and sometime plain wacky fun 24/7?!?!?

I was hooked.

I always preferred "truth". There's very little about myself that I want to keep secret.

That wasn't a very difficult truth to admit. Hard to think of questions when so many are asking though, I expect.
