Question for bird folk:
If Feathered Friend A continually flaps its wings in the presence of Feathered Friend B, does that mean "Hey, baby, what's your sign?"

If so, I believe I'm witnessing an avian dance o' lub outside my office window. :D

2. They're a lotta fun to watch
It's so cute.

Oh, and the he-bird (I assume) keeps up a constant peep-chatter.

It's like being in a bar. :D

8. I spend endless hours watching the antics of birdies.
Your analogy couldn't be more astute ~ the bar scene in a feather suit.
Is she still playing hard to get, running away from him?

3. it can mean that, it can also mean the opposite
Edited on Thu Jun-28-07 06:29 PM by pitohui
birds have a dual purpose body language, and the same or similar dances that mean "hey, baby, let's get it on" can mean something rather more hostile when the recipient of the dance is of the same sex -- keeping in mind that a display of wingspan is a boast about one's size and strength

think about the conflicting meanings of "fuck" and you might get a better idea of how this works

:-)

that said, if neither feathered friend attacks or stands down, then there is probably some sexual intrigue in the air...

for example, a mockingbird quickly tires of subtlety and it's fight or fuck pretty darn quick!

5. I don't think this is aggression
Feathered Friend A has also been seen to feed Feathered Friend B. I guess that's like their version of "I brought you some candy," but it looks kinda like they're kissing. :D

4. Maybe, maybe not
Depends on the species. But I will say there's likely mating going on in the songbird community where you are right now.

6. I'd say Friend A is a baby of Friend B
Baby birds kinda hunker down, flutter their wings & peep whenever a parent is nearby, begging for food -- even after they're nearly or the same size as the parent.

7. Birds
If feathered friend B is too young, then Feathered friend A might be Robin the cradle.... :hi:
