Who else couldn't give a rat's ass about an iPhone??
Raise your hand.

I have a free cellphone that I can't quite figure out how to use except to make a call. Why would I want a gadget that would put me bacl $500 or $600 that'd be too complex for me to use?

Am I the only one who could care less?

5. If it had enough storage to be usable as an ipod and worked with my phone co. I might be tempted
But I don't want to pay that much $ and have to switch to AT&T and still have to carry around my ipod because that thing's got no storage capacity, that sounds like a crappy deal.

About five times as fast as it as a few days ago.

And yeah, $60 is for the entry level package. For the details.

22. It's a neat little toy, but the deal killer is that you have to sign up for service with AT&T
If the price was only $299, and it would work with any cell phone service company (just by putting in that company's chip) then they would have a winner there. But as it is now it's an extremely expensive toy.

75. It's probably just a matter of time until both of my complaints are eliminated
I predict the day will come when it's half the price and it is compatible with all major cell phone service companies. When that day comes is up to Apple, of course. If they're smart, it won't be more than 1 year. If those 2 complaints I have are eliminated, I might consider buying one. But now, forget it.

answering the phone at the movies, using the phone in the quiet areas of the library, talking to other people on the phone and ignoring their guests etc. The cell phone is a major rude and dangerous habit enabler.

I was on the train going to work. My mother was in the CICU, but I HAD to go into work for a bit before going back to the hospital. I was calling the nurse to make certain that my mother had survived the night. Some idiots got pissed with me. Now, those same assholes probably jabber on their cellphones constantly.

Happily, she had and lived for several years after that.

87. yeah, you spend hours at a hospital and no one is there to talk to you- if you want to
work with the doctors, you have to do it when it's good for them. i remember the nurse asking if the number i gave her was my cell.
it wasn't and and she was like I hope you know you'll be doing a lot of sitting and waiting.
on my way home, i got the cell. and after the rude guy on the bus, i never felt a shred of self conciousness about it either. i guess i should be grateful for that.

51. AT&T is doubling or tripling their profits with it.
Normally, wireless providers sell the phones at reduced rates based on your contract, and make up the profits through your monthly payments to them. The iphone, they're charging it's full profit value, but continuing to charge you the inflated profit-equalizing rate month to month. Bull. Shit.

Then, the iPhone doesn't have upgradeable memory, a proper keyboard, it doesn't support Windows Media or Flash, it can't record video, the battery isn't user replaceable, the sim cards apparently aren't transferable, and frankly, it lacks many of the standard features people expect from basic cell phones, let alone the *IPHONE, CONQUERER OF UNIVERSES CRUSHER OF MICROSOFT*

- You can't use your iTunes library for ring tones. (Wouldn't that be a painfully obvious feature for them to include?)
- You can't use the phone to buy music from from iTunes. (Wouldn't that be even MORE painfully obvious for them to include?)
- No IM service, not even iChat.
- No 3G support.
- No GPS.

Stupidity.. an extra 30 bucks a month to watch videos on my phone. It was actually a nightmare trying to get them to take OFF the VCast because they start you with the "free trial" and expect you never to call. "But.. but you won't be able to download tv clips to your phone." You know, that's fine. I have Tivo, I have a video iPod, and I have a MacBook. I also have brain cells I want to exercise every once in a while.

Alls I know is the "no talking on your cell phone if it isn't hands free in the car" law goes into effect July 1st here in Los Angeles, and I'm crossing my fingers it becomes one of those things cops get really stringent and douchey about because it's an easy revenue stream.

I mean, I love gadgets, but all these stories about people waiting in line for days for an iphone... jesus. If you have that kind of time, I seriously doubt you have anyone to even call when you get it.

99. I am totally with you.
Why would I want to watch videos on that tiny screen on my cell phone when I have all of the above?

And we're going hands-free here in a few months too - and not a moment too soon, if you ask me. We nearly got broadsided by some crazy person on her phone who plowed through a stop sign the other day. :eyes:

101. It's a state-wide law.
But as I understand it, you have to be pulled over for another infraction (like plowing into another car?) to actually be cited for it. :eyes:

I think the technology is kind of nifty, and if I get the new job I'm trying for, I wouldn't mind having something like it to pass the time during the 1 to 1.5 hour train ride to and from work.

It would be kind of neat to be able to read and post to DU on the train. :P

102. Me! A device that works only with AT&T (one of the worst cell phone networks)
costs $500-$600 dollars, and is reliant on Apple?

No Thanks. Not even if I Could Afford It, which I can't.

I know the next device I buy will be a smartphone of some sort; it's inevitable. For now, I have an LG VX8300 phone and a Palm Tungsten E2. I don't use either for web access because I can't afford it, I don't text message on my phone because no one else I know does either; I don't take pictures with my phone (although I could), and while I put a chip in my Tungsten E2 that stores a lot of songs, I find I rarely use it as a player, and I certainly wouldn't use my phone for that. Finally, because I use two separate devices, using my organizer doesn't mean I run out of battery power to make a call. :)

104. On Tuesday I'm going on a 10-week vacation thanks to Apple
The stock is now at $122, thank you very much. I remember touting it on this forum when it was less than half that price. It's always a cinch that Steve Jobs will out think and out execute the PC clods. That's been my focus ever since Jobs went back to Apple in the mid '90s and came out with the iMac. I've bought Apple stock more than a dozen times since then, with numerous splits and only one long lull.

Well, I had a nice basketball wagering season and (so far) with the golf matchups, so that contributes to the long vacation, but I'll credit Apple just to piss off the flailing anti-Apple crew on DU.

109. The iPhone is sort of like a Swiss Army knife
Except a Swiss Army knife has tools on it specifically designed for necessary functions, such as keeping you alive in the wilderness. An iPhone, on the other hand, is filled with tools that will keep you entertained while bears eat you. Until the battery goes out. The best you could probably do is call for help, and given AT&T's service record, there is a high chance you'll be out of a coverage area. AT&T roaming charges v. being eaten by a bear...it's a tough call.
