1. All the research stations in Antarctica...
make up about 1-2 thousand scientists year-round.

BTW, Gore has also been to Antarctica, for his climate change research.

2. Wow -- really
I don't mean to sound like a dimwit but I never really think of people living in Antartica -- that's what I like about these world wide events like Live Earth, Live Aid, Live 8 etc. It brings the world a little closer. Like right now there's a Japanese band wearing..... kilts....... I love it (can't say I care for their sound, but, hey anyone who's part of this "event" is okay by me. And I guess there's at least one rock band in Antartica too (unless their "day job" is scientists...}

:hippie:

4. Nunatak
This is funny -- just took this quote from the article in yahoo! news:

"There will also be footage from Antarctica, where the previously unknown band Nunatak, comprising two engineers, a marine biologist, a meteorologist and a polar guide at a remote British research station, have recorded a short set."

I love it!

3. My husband's lab sends a few scientists every year.

It's the only place to get the species Belgica antarctica (the Antarctic midge).

My husband can't go because he has a heart condition. The annual trips are left to the others, but he discovers neat stuff about them when they get back to the lab.

Edited to add: My husband is not quoted in the article. That is my husband's mentor and boss.
