I disagree. With fan voting, it's where the most popular meet the most popular. They may be the best, but I think that's incidental to their popularity.
Note Rockies' outfielder Matt Holliday, who got more votes than any NL player in the voting by players and managers, but he's not starting. Neither is Florida's Miguel Cabrera, who got the most player/manager votes for third basemen.
In the NL outfield, fans voted for Carlos Beltran (Mets), Barry Bonds (Giants) and Ken Griffey Jr. (Reds). Players and managers voted for Holliday, Griffey and Carlos Lee (Astros).
Rick Monday, one of the Dodgers announcers, said, "You try to reach a happy medium" between player/manager and fan votes, "because the fans support (the game)." Monday tryin' to tell us that if the voting went back to players, coaches and managers, fewer people would go to the game or watch it on teevee?
