College radio takes a kick in the butt
UMASS-Lowell's WJUL is being sold to the highest bidder.

At WJUL, the student-run radio station at UMASS-Lowell, DJ's and student administrators recently had 25 hours of airtime a week sold by the university to the Lowell Sun, a newspaper owned by the Media News Group, the seventh-largest newspaper owner in the US. The following is a letter from Abram Taber, WJUL's general manager to station alumni, seeking help and support. You can help, too!

Those goddamned corporations just have to get their filthy hands on everything, don't they? Read the full story here:

1. There is an organization, the name of which escapes me...
..who help college stations stay out of the hands religious groups. They would surely take this case up as well.

Fond memories of college radio here.

2. This Totally Betrays the Premise Campus Stations as Learning Tools
But that's no surprise, right?

If the school wants five hours of news, that should be put together by the students. If anyone thinks a bunch of newspaper people with no broadcasting experience are going to be much better on the air than the kids already running the place, that's just silly.

OTOH, the students currently running the place are going to have to be serious about producing such a program and put as much thought into producing a news program as a music program.

3. someone should take a look at their charter
I though if a station was licensed under an educational charter, they could not broadcast advertising or sell airtime. Of course some stations now routinely violate this especially during college sports. Most universities no longer behave like non-profit entities, and should have their non-profit status revoked and should be forced to incorporate and pay taxes since they want to operate like corporations.
