My dog sure gave me a scare this morning, I just got home from Austin and we had to go to the Vet.
She had a bite on the leg from some kind of insect that really started to swell.

She is resting now and the swelling is going down.

It has rained a lot here so many insects are above ground.

Everyone keep a close watch on your fur babies.

5. Thanks, she is fine now,
I am the one that needs a stiff drink.

Her leg was getting so swollen, I didn't waste anytime getting her to the vet.

I have been feeling a little guilty for leaving her for so long, this doesn't help.

We still don't know what could have bite her.

16. Well, get yourself a drink!
It's hard to tell. It could have been a spider bite, a scorpion sting, or even a minor snake bite. Texas has so many spiny, pokey, fangy critters it's a grab bag really.

Don't feel guilty. It's a part of nature down there and would have happened anyway. It's just good that you got to her in time.

21. The grass isn't that high but I will be cutting the grass this afternoon.
The Vet said that my dog was one of 9 that he has treated for some kind of bite.

Our yards are so wet that they smell, the underground insects are coming up.

4. Our next door cat has been bitten by snakes 3 or 4 times.
Probably moccasins, maybe pygmy rattlers.
He is one tough tabby.

I had a cat that would hunt snakes and kill them.

17. Yeah, many do. Ours did.
There was a family of black racers in the palmettos when we moved in.
I was OK with that, but within a few months, no more snakes.
Old Ace cleared 'em out.
Glad your dog is OK.

9. Both of my dogs eat wasps
bees, hornets, moths ...any thing that flies.

I am not sure if they get stung. I try to keep them from doing it, but it's hopeless.

Hope your pooch heals up quick

12. I had a kitten once that was chasing bees in the back yard
I tried to stop him, but when my back was turned,he was after those bees. One day Cricket let out a sharp "meow" and did this back flip thing, he finally got stung. He was through bee hunting after that..LOL

One of my neighbors said that he saw snakes on the streets and ditchs when it was rainy here over the weekend.

We have had a lot of rain.

18. I think they do get stung
They about have to. Once they get whatever they are playing with to the ground, they tear it to shreds with darting paw and teeth attacks.

I love how you said "Cricket let out a sharp "meow" and did this back flip thing." I can totally see that :D

13. I am thinking along those lines myself.
I think all this rain has brought out a lot of insects.

She will stay in for awhile.

My dog weighs almost 70 lbs. but I pick her up like she was 7 lbs.

I thought she had be bitten by a snake at first.

32. uh, yes if it was a rattler it WOULD swell and then turn black after a few days
Edited on Mon Jul-09-07 06:39 PM by Kali
I have seen quite a few animals that have been bitten. Actually I would say the scorpion would be less likely to swell, at least that has been my personal human experience with THEM.

22. Probably a spider bite
I've had dogs with those (and I've had them myself) - they can swell up enormously.

Funny spider bite story - I got bit on my hand by a spider. I didn't see it happen but my hand started to swell and it was painful. I'd worked all day and my SO and I were having dinner and I did NOT want to go to the ER.

We decided to keep an eye on it and started playing cards to take my mind off the pain. I decided that if it went to my wrist, I'd go to the ER.

Well, after about an hour or so, the swelling had reached my wrist. It was about 8 pm by then and now I wanted to go even less. So I decided that if it got to my elbow, I'd go.

By this time, you could actually see it travelling up my arm. It was wierd and kind of creepy but I can be incredibly lazy so we sat there, played rummy and watched it go up my arm to my elbow. By now, it was about 10.

I decided that if it went to my shoulder, I'd go to the ER. Luckily for me, it finally stopped about halfway between my elbow and my shoulder. The following day when my doctor saw it, he thought I was nuts.

I now keep Benadryl on hand just in case.

29. Thanks. I have a family of wasps outside my door. More like a commune.
Little buggers moved in while I was away. I preffered the family of birds that were there in the spring. Not to be confused with the family of mice under the floor from before....

I'll be careful and keep an eye of my kitties too!
