Well, interview #1 was yesterday
and it went really well. Unfortunately, it's a 45 minute drive and a 'Contract to perm' position but it pays well (really don't want to work contract if I can help it though).

Interview #2 (the job I REALLY want and full-time with bennies) is Friday afternoon. They probably won't make a decision before the end of next week which means if job #1 makes an offer i'm going to be REALLY torn as to what to say.

ugh

2. If you say "yes" to job #1
are you under any obligation to them? Meaning, would you have to sign a contract with them, or did you sign anything with headhunter/job agency?

While it's not nice, you could always accept job #1 - if offered - and then give them, say, an August 6 start date. Then, if Job #2 gives you an offer, you can just tell job #1 that something else came up in the meantime.

No, it's not the nicest thing to do, but I'm sure it has happened a million times before.

3. someone suggested that on an earlier thread
no, I haven't signed anything.

That is what i'll probably do although the thought of doing it kind of sickens me. I just don't like doing stuff to people like that.

I'm HOPING that Friday's interview is positive enough and job #1 takes till Monday to make an offer.

Funny. Had the phone interview with company #2 last week. Hadn't heard anything so I emailed the guy this morning asking for an update and told him I was probably going to be offered another position but really wanted to work for them.

He emailed back that they probably wouldn't make a decision until the end of next week and in the same email, asked me to come in on Friday.

4. I think I had suggested it
And, I agree that it's not nice, but most companies realize that:

1) Most people prefer full-time jobs over contract-to-hire ones and that,

2) People could be interviewing elsewhere.

I think I had said that if Company 1 or Company 2 ever had a downtown or a re-organization, they would not feel guilty about laying off people. It might be different if either company was a small, family type company, though.

8. It's legit after Friday's interview to ask
when you'll hear back from them. If they say "end of next week" again, ask "Oh, so you've got some other people interviewing next week then?"

If they say Yes, then there's not much you can do. Or maybe accept #1's offer and later rescind. (which I find kinda distasteful myself)

If they say No, you can mention again that you have an offer coming, and is there any way the process can be expedited, since they're your first choice (a little flattery can't hurt, esp. when it's true)

I'm guessing they have other people coming in though.

Tell them you suffer from Multiple Personality Disorder and you'll have to discuss the offer among yourselves.

11. God, I hate that. I lost two jobs because I passed on the first one to accept the second one
and then the second one fell apart due to a staff uprising.

It doesn't hurt to call them Monday and tell them you have been offered another job, but you really want to work with them. I know when Mr. Gray and I were in a hiring position, we always went with the most persistent if they were qualified. It kinda helped us make up our minds without having to spend too much time thinking about it. I love persistent pains in the ass. They always turn out to be better employees.

If #1 makes an offer, try to stall them so you can "think about it over the weekend." I just left a job with a 20 minute commute to go back to my old one with a 45 minute commute. The drive sucks but the environment is so much better. Books on tape...catch up on phone calls...

Good luck!

26. Good luck!
I was kind of in the opposite positon to you. Interview #1 was the long commute but it was perm with bennefits. Interview#2 was close to home but contract to hire. I don't like the contract to hire part, but for the company I work for they don't hire direct anymore...If job #1 really wants you, they will let you take a few days to make a decision. Perhaps if you mention at interview #2 (assuming it goes well) that you need to know soon (ie you had another interview previously that you may have to make a decision on). That has worked well for me in the past. In fact it might speed up the decision making if they think you have another offer you are considering...
