Anyone see Saturday's Padres game
and can tell me what the fuck Wells did to earn a 7-game suspension? Holy shit...did he flatten an ump or something?

2. First I've heard of it

*commences googling*

(snip)

In handing down the punishment, Bob Watson, baseball's discipline czar, cited Wells' "violent and aggressive actions," including throwing a baseball at the backstop as he left the field.

(snip)

On Saturday, (plate umpire Ed) Hickox warned Wells to get back to the mound or he'd be tossed. Wells said he then asked Hickox if he was going to be fair to both teams, which is when he was ejected.

The portly pitcher had to be restrained by San Diego manager Bud Black, two coaches and Bard, and Wells fired a ball against the screen as he walked off the field.

Watson said in his letter that Wells sprayed Hickox with saliva, and that throwing the baseball was "extremely dangerous and showed a reckless disregard for the safety and well-being of the fans near the backstop."

3. He got the suspension for
'violent actions'...for his 'animated argument with an umpire." Apparently his 'violent and aggressive actions' included throwing a ball at the backstop...the backstop, not the umpire...as he left the field.

I mean....shit. From what I can tell, there wasn't even any contact. There HAS to have been more to it.

SEVEN games. For a pitcher, that's like two fuckin' months. Well, almost.

4. I don't think they mean starts
When Marichal got nicked for 10 games over the Roseboro Incident in '65, he missed only two starts.

Funny thing about that was, the Giants already had a coupla pitchers on the DL, so Herman Franks got permission from the NL to pitch anybody he wanted, and he sent in Matty Alou for a couple of innings against Pittsburgh in a lost cause. But damned if Alou didn't strike out Willie Stargell. :D

8. Well, so wrote Willie Mays
In fact, he wrote that Alou struck out Stargell twice, but I question the likelihood of that in two innings.

It's times like this I wish I worked for the Sporting News. They've got every box score since... well, since they started publishing. I'd love to get a look at that one.

6. Wells ain't the Pads ace...
but with Young finally serving his suspension, they can't afford to lose him at all. The appeal oughta delay it, but one start or seven...

I know, I know...you're absolutely devastated at the prospect. Crestfallen. Dejected. Heartbroken. Chin up, Bucko.

:P

Seriously...seems to me that seven games is a bit steep, especially if there was no contact. I'm betting it'll get reduced on appeal.

7. Yeah, and in baseball's wonderful judiciary
he gets to keep pitching throughout the appeal process. :eyes:

That's almost as good as having W as commissioner.
