A calm, sultry morning erupted in gunfire Wednesday as Redding police vainly attempted to corral a pit bull who had bitten a resident.
Before morning's end, the escaped dog had been shot with pepper spray, a stun gun, twice with a 12-gauge shotgun and run over -- twice -- by a police car.
The dog, Soldier, lay dead in a driveway on Oakmont Drive north of Old Alturas Road in east Redding.
Late Wednesday afternoon, police released a synopsis of the shooting that repeatedly described the dog as a vicious animal and said that Soldier also had attempted to bite an officer.
