If you are an hourly employee ... (Question)
and you are required to attend a mandatory meeting - shouldn't you be paid for as long as you are in the meeting?

4. That is what I thought but
I am just a peon in this bean counting corporation....

I am required to go to a meeting tomorrow that my attending will put me at 9.5 hours for the day and they said I will only be paid for 8.

10. I'd tell them to shove it
As an hourly employee, your time is your time, if you aren't being paid for it, you can do whatever you want and be wherever you want. What they are telling you to do is aginst the law for them!

17. I have two options as I see it....
I can either come in late to work so that I will be paid for the entire time I am at the meeting, or I can come in as usual and leave 15 minutes after the meeting starts - just walk out....

I really hate being put in this position.

24. option 3
just find some time to fuck off if you can, equal to the time the meeting takes up. Hell, I'd be sleeping somewhere if I could.

Either that or take it out in office supplies...

7. Even as a lowly barely above min. wage retail employee...
I've been paid for meetings I've had to attend, whether I'm scheduled to work that day or not. So, yes, as an hourly employee, you should be. If you were salary, that would be another matter.

They told me that I would be paid for my 8 hours but not for any time that exceeds that while I am at the meeting.

14. I can imagine...that is not fair.
Don't they have overtime? You know, if you're a f/t employee you get overtime for anything over 40hrs/week? At my retail jobs I've always been p/t, so I just got paid for another hour or so, regular pay.

15. I do get overtime - usually I average an hour or two a week
and some people in my dept get 10-15 (my time is just more valuable to me than to milk the system and be here that long)

The thing is that I had a dr appt today and came in late. I was going to work extra for the remainder of the week in order to make up the time. This is common practice here. Well, they told me that I would only be paid for the 8 hours tomorrow, even if I came in 2 hours early to make up time from today. So therefore, I will come in late again tomorrow and force them to pay me the 8 hours.

12. hourLy, you have to get paid
however, many companies are shitbags, and they'LL avoid paying you (especiaLLy if it's OT) at aLL costs. just mention that you'd prefer not to spend your free time with LegaL services to make sure the company obeys the Law.

i'm trying not to be overLy obnoxious with showing off pix and such. :P

ps: it doesn't matter about their Letter, they stiLL have to pay you, unLess you agreed somewhere to not be paid for meetings Like these. however, if you're worried about your job i'm not sure what to advise. they can't LegaLLy fire you for that, but they couLd fire you/ Lay you off for other reasons. any company worth their saLt wiLL make up a compLeteLy bogus, yet vaLid reason for a firing.

i couLd go on and on, but that's the beginning.

19. Yep.
File a wage complaint with the state -- the letter stating you are not getting paid but are required to attend is pretty damning. If there are more employees affected by this, there could be a class action.

(I work in a labor/employment law firm in Wisconsin.)

20. Thank you....my coworker is up in arms
and she is going to file a complaint. I told her that I was scared to because I am already deemed a troublemaker for insisting on my freedom of speech rights - long story - and so therefore I didn't want to rock the boat. She said she would file the complaing with the labor dept.

My coworker already said she would file a complaint - so I don't have to do it. It just really pisses me off that they try to get away with such shit.

Unions would make employers actually pay their employees for being at work, and then where would it all end?

34. absolutely. insist on it. And if they won't pay you for it,

then ask that the meetings be split up into shifts, so that they can be presented to you on company time, and not your personal time.
