Tulsa Drillers coach killed by line drive
This is just bizarre, and sad.

NORTH LITTLE ROCK (AP) — Tulsa Drillers coach Mike Coolbaugh died after being struck in the head by a line drive as he stood in the first-base coach's box during a game.

The Texas League game was suspended in the ninth inning Sunday after the 35-year-old former major leaguer was hit by a foul ball off the bat of Tino Sanchez of the Arkansas Travelers. Coolbaugh was taken to Baptist Medical Center-North Little Rock, where he was pronounced dead.

1. That's messed up.
Mike Coolbaugh played in the bigs for about a year (2001-2002). He was with St. Louis and Milwaukee.

Tough way to go, but there are those that would say that he died doing what he loved.

4. Very sad for the coach, his family, and the guy who hit the ball
who will have to live with this accident for the rest of his life.

5. It took 15 minutes for the amubulance to arrive? WTF?
High school football games have ambulances standing by. 15 minutes? That seems like a really long time to me.

6. Not all of 'em
I did a story once on emergency medical at high school football games, after a 15-year-old kid died during practice. It boils down to how much money the school and/or league has, because ambulance companies charge a hell of a lot to be on stand-by.

Fifteen minutes is not an acceptable response time, though. I'm not sure about ambulances, but for fire it's eight minutes — around here, anyway.
