Ghosts images on the VCR--anybody ever have this problem?

I bought a new DVD/VCR and it worked OK except for one thing: ghost images continually flitting across the picture when the VCR played.

These ghost images also continually flitted when the VCR wasn't playing, when you should be seeing a blue screen with the image of a disk.

Any ideas?
