TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The Africanized honey bee is now in Florida and state agriculture officials want residents to be on the lookout.
Africanized bees were discovered in the state five years ago. Since then, there have been a number of nests and swarms found across the state. There have also been reports of attacks.
The bees are known for their aggressive behavior. Agriculture officials said that behavior will become more common as their numbers grow in Florida. So the state has developed a series of public service announcements telling residents of the danger the bees can pose to people and animals.
The state maintains nearly 500 bait hives across the state to monitor the spread of Africanized honey bees.
There have been no reported attacks in Florida, but a horse in Hendry Country was attacked in May.
