You'd think that through all the millions of years of evolution, we'd have learned to block out pain
but we haven't, and does that make ANY sense?

Some part of our body hurts. OK, then, one would think we would be able to recognize that and ignore it. We know, by now, that it's not life-threatenting, not a fight-or-flight response that we really NEED.

So it would be a damn nice aspect of evolution as a species, wouldn't it, if we could just get rid of this atavistic pain response, when we KNOW it's not a real threat, but just the effect of an old injury, and be able to make it go away just long enough to LET US SLEEP?

That's not too much to ask of Evolution, is it? Science is letting me down here tonight. And not letting me sleep.

1. We need to accept that nature's not very smart.
Cases in point: wisdom teeth and the Republican party. I figure that since pain is the body's way of telling us that the situation at hand is most likely something we should extricate ourselves from, and, as far as we know, "nature" or the physical body is not a conscious being unto itself, it has no way of differentiating between pain that signifies something really dangerous and pain that's chronic or merely inconveniencing.

3. "Wisdom teeth and the Republican Party." Thank you.
I actually understood what you said, and it helped me feel better.

2. My dear Redstone...
I'm so sorry your pain is keeping you awake tonight....

I wish like anything you were painfree...

Sometimes my shoulders hurt (bony spurs etc.) and that keeps me awake too....

6. Peg, thank you as usual. But dammit, I had a good day at work today (six hours) and met
four, count'em FOUR ad deadlines, and stayed awake for Mrs R's Wonderful Marinated Chicken Dinner with Fresh Corn on the Cob and Local Broccoli, and then the fucker nails me when I try to go to bed?

Imagine the frustration. Fuck me, here it is at almost 2 AM, and I'm on DU? I shold be asleep, dammit!

7. I hear you, Redstone. I think it's good as an alert or warning that
something may be wrong, but when it's constant, yeah, it would be great to be able to block it out.

My back was locked up for four days, and it hurt to sit, stand and walk, as well as lay down. And I know YOU are more than familiar with that.

It's finally unknotted itself, but man, it sucks when it's going on!

8. no one said evolution makes sense
in fact, the "bad design" of it is more an argument against creation, if you get me.

Pain is there to (a) remind me to take my hand out of the fire (b) remind me to never again put my hand into a fire and (c) remind me I am alive.

It also doesn't make sense that we eat and breathe out of the same hole, which makes choking easier. Dolphins are better designed than we are: Mammals v5.0 or something.

9. Pain is an indication that their may be a problem
what I dont get is why we think things that are bad for us taste better than what is good for us, I think evolution should have destroyed that
